Much of life is Hope & Chance. I hoped one day to smoke something unique and yesterday evening I had the chance to do just that. At a recent Tatuaje event (thank you Tobacco Road) I received a gift pack of Tat Black Robustos with my purchase. These were such beauties I just had to sock them away for a special occasion, and as circumstances would have it, now until early July has become a special occasion. More on that later. So Tuesday night I sat down on my patio with this vitola and a bottle of Shiner Black and here is the review, I hope you find it helpful and enjoy it.

Pre-light was amazing with the folded shag foot and the supple, yet strong wrapper only hinting at the serenity that awaited me. Cinnamon brown in color, the wrapper does not appear oily, was only lightly toothy, and is matte in appearance. Construction appeared firm, and the aroma was a woodsy, barnyard melange. The beer was ice cold and the outside temp was in the mid 80s. Instead of using my trusty tripple flame to start this puppy up, I used cedar wrap I had set aside; a great call if I may say so myself as it ignighted the woodsy aromas of the stick.

The first third was an easy draw, almost too easy, as demonstrated with the ash falling off every 1/2 inch or so for the first half of the robusto. The taste was reminicient of the first time I smelled cured tobacco wholeleaf - raw, blunt, and unaffected. Good start even if it wouldn't hold an ash. ;)
Just about the half way point this sucker kicked it up two notches! BAM!! Not only did it hold a very nice ash & cherry, but the woodsy flavors/aromas exploded into an oaky/cedary/brush oevre tempered by straight up old style tobacco and leather. Sounds odd to be wrangled by those flavors , but here it worked and didn't push the profile over into the super-strong arena. I got all of the punch of a heavyweight with none of the bruises.
The voluminous smoke continued and the taste kept on commin' all the way to the nub. Good Soldier :)

I think if this becomes part of Pete's repitoire, and he can adjust the softer construction issue of the first half, this will be a champion in my book, and that of many others. Only thing that could have made it better is a few good friends around at the time - that will come this weekend with the lighting of Pete's favorite cigar, La Requeza.! :D :0

I'm glad to have smoked this Tatuaje Black Robusto. :) Two tumbs up and I will take one box please.

edited to fix pictures :D

hmmm now where did I put my  button!?

Nice review!! Hope my local gets those in (fat chance. :sign: )

Great review! I love Shiner. I can't believe I haven't seen the Black Lager available before. Have I been living in a cave?? :( I'm sure Spec's will have it. Either way, I'm sure it will be much easier finding the Shiner than the Tat Black Robusto! Thanks for sharing the experience.

Well done Jeff! What a treat that smoke must of have been. This actually explains a lot for me. At the last HERF at the C&B, I had picked up a Tat Black band that had been left on the table by Jim. I thought it looked a little bit big, so I brought it home. Well, I finally crossed paths with one of these Tat Blacks as of lately (Thanks Justin!). I took out the Tat Black band from Jim's cigar that night and... holy shit, this Black band it way bigger than this cigar! I didn't know what to make of it. I guess I had thought that the pre-release was a different size. Now I know better. Thanks!

Thanks for the great review! How do you think the robusto compared with the regular release in terms of flavour profile?

Well seeing as I've only had the pre-release of the lonsdale, I would say that the robusto is much fuller & more complex that the lonsdale. I had planned to store my jar of the losdales for the long term but, now some circumstances have changed and I will smoke 1 or 2 very soon and get back to you on the new batch.

And YES, at this time, these are only available from Pete or at one of his events.

FYI - I'll work on reducing the size of the pics so they don't take up so much space and take so long to load. :)

Good one, Jeff! I have one of these gifted to me by a fine BOTL here. I'll probably hoard it for a long time before I decide to smoke it.

Great review. Cant wait to get my hands on one of them. The "framing" of the photos is also quite awesome. Brings be back to the days of printing negatives in the dark room, and filing negative holders.

I smoked the Robusto back in January, and I have to say I prefer the corona gorda. But the Robusto I smoked had two wrappers on it. Pete said the roller messed up and forgot the fuma cap, so he just rolled another wrapper on top of it..

WHERE did you get a Tatuaje Black Corona Gorda? ??? I thought there was only the Robusto & Lonsdale? I'd love to have the chance to try that vitola.

The Black Label in the jar is a corona gorda, not a lonsdale. The Lonsdale is one of my favorite sizes, I wish Pete had come out with a lonsdale black...

**Edit to add 'wish'**

I scored a 3 pack not to long ago of the robusto but still think the CG has a better flavor being a tad smaller in ring gage

Jeff, nice review. I was blessed with one of these from a very generous BOTL that always goes out of his way to send me some HTF stick(you know how you are and thank you) and I enjoyed it also.
