Last week I moved my humidors into my cantina (cold cellar) in the basement of my home (because the house temp in now over 69F) and I have a question for you veterans...

The current Temp in my cantina is between 51 and 55F. Is there any negative effects to storing at this Temp other than the slowing of the aging process? BTW, RH is about 70-75% but inside the humidors still around 65%.

Hey Jabba,
I had my Aristocrat cabinet in the basement of my house since I got it; it sat there during last winter and the temps were in the mid 50s, much like yours.

My cigars are fine and have not suffered any ill effects. I'm sure it would come down to preference as to how warm/cold you should keep them and how that effects how fast/slow you wish to age those puros.

Darren

most people recommend 65F, but I've been reading that some hardcore collectors keep their sticks at 55F.

My father in I smoked a few JLPs today from the cantina and I just wanted to report back that they smoked awesome... seems like no issues storing cigars at 50-55F

jabba, as long as you can keep your humidity around 58-62 percent then your cigars will be fine. I can only get to 64-67 degrees in my cabinet but would definitely drop it lower if I could. If memory serves the best tobacconists in London keep their cigars in the high 50's.

Currently it's at 52F and 72% in the cantina... the hygro in the humidor reads 64%

Jabba, sounds great. If you can keep those numbers, you should have some great smoking cigars. Of course, if you are looking for long term again, there is some evidence, and some (very knowledgeable) people will tell you that those temps might be a (tiny) bit low for IDEAL aging conditions. If I were you, I would be thrilled to have those conidtions. My humis are in the low 60's now, in the high 50's in the winter, and in the hottest, grossest, most humid-nasty days of New England summers, edge dangerously close to temps that I do not like to see. As soon as I pull the trigger on a cooled cabinet, though...those problems should go away.

I've been reading more on this cellar thing and apparently Davidoff built a cellar for his Geneva store a long time ago, I wonder if he just called it a Cellar or if it was actually underground.

i move mine to the lower (basement) every year as well, (May to September) and keep a desktop for those during the week. The temp. in the summer is just too high here, (80's+) indoors, on the second level. I try and avoid the A/C, but the cigars keep well in the cellar.

I recently moved my humidors to the basement when I got home one day and freaked that the temp was 75! I now have temps of 59 as of this morning. Smoked a few cigars recently, had a great experience with an anejo. Based on what the master said, I think we're in the zone right now.

Current reading this morning 64% humidity 59F

Sunward -- congrats! I didn't even know!!!
