I don't like snakes much but I respect them. I love to hike and have run accross a few Timber Rattlers in the last few years.
The scariest encounter was at a place called Crabtree Meadows. It's a beautiful spot in the George Washington National Forrest I think and a great camping spot. Green meadows, creeks running through it, etc.
We had a group of kids up there to hike the AT for a week a few years ago. These are the kids I work with in a residential treatment program. We set up camp and around dusk, we were walking a group down a path that had 3 foot tall grass on either side. I was leading and it was just about dark. As I was beginning to take a step I noticed what looked like a log lying on the trail. I stopped and it turned out to be a 4 foot rattler. Glad I was leading and not one of the hyper kids instead!!
We waited and watched and they learned how to respect the snake as we were just visiting!!
Beautiful snake though.........
Nice post MMM!
