The Health Front

That just means START SMOKING, so that you get the first hand smoke, and stay away from the harmful 2nd hand smoke. ;)

My thoughts exactly. As I read the article, I was jokingly thinking to myself "well, I don't have a lot to worry about as 95% of the smoke I'm near is first-hand".

You forget the perils of 6th hand smoke: The damage caused when somebody talks about wanting another hit of tobacco.

I didn't read the article, but I am going to assume they aren't talking about second hand tobacco smoke.

Fine by me, go on with your bad self.

The article appears ludicrous, I know. Sometimes I'm just surprised by what's fit to print.

They found that patients with high levels of cotinine were 44% more likely to show signs of cognitive impairment than those with very low levels.

Sounds to me that 56% of those with high levels of cotinine are LESS likely meaning that if you have low levels of cotinine, you're MORE likely to develop dementia.

Any of you guys smoking today? If so, let me know. I wanna hang out with you so I don't develop Alzheimer's.

What a bunch of bull$hit this article is. The biggest factor in a person's chances of developing dementia and/or Alzheimer's is if it runs in your family. If your mother and father had it and so did most of your relatives, you can live in a vacuum never being exposed to second-hand smoke and you're still screwed.

I'd like to see the actual article in the BJM. I'd wager the results and methodology lean heavily towards the correlative mantra "correlation is not causation" For example there is a strong positive correlation between ice-cream consumption and drownings :0 it is irrefutable and well documented. When the amount of ice cream consumed by a population increases, so do the number of drownings. However, the truth to the matter is ice-cream consumption increases as the weather gets warmer. Hmmm...... I wonder what other activities might increase as the weather gets hotter? Could be.....swimming? :whistling:

Through my own longitudinal case study, I have discovered there is a strong inverse relationship between the participants amount of cigars enjoyed and homicidal urges felt towards those idiots around them  So as far as I am concerned, this is irrefutable evidence that smoking does in fact save lives!

Probably the worst news came in 2005, when studies showed strong evidence that 8th hand smoke causes significant shrinkage of the penis, and loosening of the vaginal walls.

Not as bad as 9th hand smoke, discovered a few months later, which swells your eyelids and causes acute off-key singing in the shower and bathroom.

I think you've nailed it here. In order to prove that the low cognitive skills in the 44% where a result of the high levels of cotinine, they would've had to establish a base prior to the introduction of cotinine. To simply compare one group to another is ridiculous, who's to say one group was all MENSA members and the others Mets fans? Yeah, I said it. If they were to draw any conclusions from this study, I would hope that they would've got what CC did out of it. This is more fact manipulation rather than science.

I've got a PDF of the actual article. Anyone interest can contact me. I'll update after I've read with my "scientific glasses", meaning critically looking at the data and shredding it. :whistling:
