I'm curious about this as i think it's a good idea to do a 'cleanse' periodically, to fush the toxins out of your system. I'm a little hesitant about this as i don't wanna lose lean muscle, and although i've read lots of testimonies, i don't know anyone who's actually done it.

Anyone here done this?

I have used fruit before, not solely lemonade. Fruit is a natural detergent which cleans the lining of your stomach. Check out the link below, I lost a lot of weight using "Natural Hygiene". It deals with circadian rhythms and not mixing starches with protiens. If you are not hypo glycemic and do not mind not having potato's this might be for you...

It's all bullshit. Don't bother.

It's an irrational concept, yet an intriguing idea, that modern life so fills us with poisons from polluted air and food additives that we need to be periodically "cleaned out" ("detoxified"). Never mind that natural chemicals in our foods are thousands of times more potent than additives, or that most Americans are healthier, live longer, and can choose from the most healthful food supply ever available.

The elaborate, manipulative hoax of "detoxification" is gaining ground. Many people sincerely believe that their intestines, colon, and blood stream are subject to "clogging" by undigested foods and poisons. Food faddists seem to have a special fascination with bowels, colons, and body wastes.)

The detoxification theory can enable con artists to gain great power over their customers by diagnosing and curing "potentially fatal" (but nonexistent) illnesses. "They have to invent the idea of toxins," says Peter Fodor, president of the Lipoplasty Society of North America, "because that gives them something to pretend they can fix."

A search on the Internet revealed an article by Alyson Greenhalgh writing for the BBC on this topic. Alyson points out that many of us believe that food and drinks contain toxins that accumulate in the body, which need to be flushed out to restore good health.

Actually, the human body is perfectly well equipped to deal with toxins on its own, with the liver and kidneys doing a perfectly good job without our interference.

People who use such detox diets usually do lose some weight and start feeling marginally better due to weight loss, but not toxin shedding. Adherents of the liquid-only diets will probably also tend to feel faint because of low blood sugar levels, and may become irritable and develop headaches. The latter symptoms are signs of caffeine withdrawal, not toxin purging.

There is very little scientific evidence to support the use of strict detox diets. In fact, it would be much healthier and sensible if we rather avoided excessive intakes of rich, fatty foods and alcoholic drinks all year round instead of indulging and then trying to fix our poor eating habits with a minimalistic diet which can lead to other problems such as feeling faint.

According to Greehalgh, the greatest irony is that the human liver, which is primarily responsible for ridding the body of toxic substances derived from alcohol, functions best on a diet rich in proteins such as meat, fish and dairy products. So by starving yourself, you are not actually assisting the liver to get rid of toxins! Do you really want to starve your liver when it needs proteins to function properly?

It would seem that detox diets are not what they are made out to be and if used unwisely can cause problems.

After testing the kidney and liver functions and measuring the antioxidant and aluminium levels in their blood we found there were no differences between the groups.

Which just goes to show, in a binge and purge culture relying on a detox isn’t the solution. Your body has its own way of regulating toxins and a week of suffering won’t change that so you are better off sticking to a balanced diet all the time.

Detox Diets Debunked

Without research available to support the claims made by these various detoxification diets, consumers should be skeptical.

Rather than going on a short-term detox diet, make healthful long-term changes to your diet such as eating a more plant-based diet, drinking more water, and cutting back on your caffeine and alcohol intake.

Although detox diets may make you feel better, the scientific basis for such a stringent diet is somewhat lacking and there's little evidence that there's any good to be gained from following them.

Of course, it's true to say that food isn't all pure nutrients and the average diet will inevitably contain some toxic substances (alcohol, for example).

Fortunately, the human body is well equipped to deal with such toxins, and they are effectively removed and excreted by the liver within hours of consumption.

The basic misconception of detox diets, however, is that fruits and vegetables are low in toxins while meat and fish lead to the accumulation of harmful substances in the body. In fact, the opposite is often true; vegetables such as cabbage and onions are high in naturally occurring toxins, while meat and fish often have low levels.

The greatest irony is that the liver, the body's detoxification organ, can most effectively breakdown and eliminate toxins on a high-protein diet such as one rich in meat and fish.

Your daily diet should contain at least five portions of fruit and vegetables as well as lean meat, carbohydrates and dairy products

Of course, fruit and vegetables are very important components of a healthy diet, but the idea that you should exist solely on such foods for days on end isn't consistent with the principle of a healthy balanced diet. Your daily diet should contain at least five portions of fruit and vegetables as well as lean meat, carbohydrates and dairy products.

Eating a healthy diet on a daily basis will help the body function properly and it shouldn't be necessary to pursue a detoxification regimen. However, if you do find the urge to detox, use it as an excuse to kick-start a new healthy eating regime.

A better alternative to cleanse/detox is to adhere to a healthy and balanced lifestyle always.

I don't buy into the... "abuse the body for 3 months and then make it all better with a cleanse thinking."

We do that anyway, i got a house full of hippie wannabes, pretty much nothing but healthy / organic food gets eaten here. I guess i bought into the BS of needing to flush the body of accumulated toxins

As far as a 'diet' program, generally i follow the Body for Life program, which is working out 6 days a week, eating 6 times a day, and eating healthy foods.

The best way to flush the system is some good Indian food or a bowl of fried Chili Peppers :)

Body for Life is a reasonable book -- don't buy into the fringe cleansing BS, though. To date, there's absolutely nothing to substantiate the various claims, and there is an awful lot of money to be made by juice companies, health tonic companies, etc. if there was any shred of evidence that this stuff worked.

Beware hippies bearing pseudo-science, for they are dangerous.

Damn, Andrew. Looks like you've had the motivation to do the research.

Fair to say that a balanced diet, regular exercise, and plenty of sleep are the keys to a long and healthy life? ???

Wilkey

Watermelon. It's cheap, its a diuretic, its got fiber, full of lycopene, and great on warm summer days. Just make sure you have access to a bathroom.

Other fruits to consider:

Apples
Grapefruits
Strawberries
Raspberries
Blueberries
Pears

Hmmm... 0 for 3. Methinks I need to work on this.

bad idea, the chances of gaulstones is huge as well.

try doing a juice fast for 3-5 days, or just eat a well balanced meal comprised of fresh vegetables, fruit and minimal meat, cut your carb intake in half, and excercise.

nothing comes easy.

Check out the links that Andrew provided. Unless you've got a failing liver, your body will take care of the detox all on its own.

yeah, i read those links, and then found some on my own, and i'm not doing that. It was not about weight loss, it was to 'flush' my system, but after a pretty good bit of reading, it appears the body does that itself. Trying to lose weight on fad diets just causes one to yo-yo, which in the long run is terrible for you. I'll just continue exercising and eating healthy. in 2 months i should be at 15% bf, which ain't bad, then goal is to get to 12%.

Indeed moki did a great job showing that it’s a bunch of bunk. The only thing I’d say is if you do exercise daily just take a multi vitamin containing antioxidants. When one exercises vigorously they can developed a few things you would want to flush out (But your body will do it on its own within 2-3 days).
