OK, we had a nice long talk last night and I'm convinced that it's NOT a nesting issue. She's just truly concerned with the smoke smell in the carpet. So, that's a pretty easy solution that she has no problem with. Remove the carpet, install hardwood!

Wade, I'm sure it's not necessary to tell you about women and their motivations - emotions, emotions, emotions! But that being said, this change may be possible given the right circumstances.
First, some input. Does your wife drink at all? Is there something she's been dropping hints about lately? Also, timing is everything. Someone suggested waiting. Not that much time may be required for her to reach a proper mindset for this little maneuver.
I'm sure you see where this is heading. A deal, basically, like any other. Find out what the objections are and systematically remove them. Also, the straight forward approach works on some better than others. Do you think you can come out and ask her, "What will it take to get this to work for you" or is this likely to backfire because she'll feel she's being manipulated. Speaking of which, if she is into manipulating(and most are on some level), you might be able to make her feel she is manipulating you by her getting something she wants in return for this room.Just some ideas.
