I look at the difference a year can make first then some the lesions I have learned next.

I was purchasing cigars from an online source – Mike at MD cigars and he pointed me here and said there is a great group that can use some new members here. I showed up and read a few of the posts and the section on what a Cigar pass was.

After about a week of browsing I signed up, my cigar experience prior to that point was with a couple of buddies I have, they would occasionally share a decent cigar with me.
I had a Humidor that sat idle for about 2 years it was stocked with some Thompson things and a few Ok cigars. It always looked neat and orderly – I didn’t partake in cigars that often. Maybe a few times a month at the most.

When I signed up I was welcomed by a few folks, Jeff – Matt –Vern & Big Worm and Dave and Kenny and some others. It was pretty cool I started reading the site on a pretty regular basis. Then it was time to take the plunge and try and join a pass. I was quite worried about making puts – I drove to all the cigar shops I could find and bought 3 and 4 sticks of each brand I thought to be pretty decent smokes. I then started buying more gars online and such..

I got into my first pass and when it arrived it was now a new world. I saw cigars that I only could read about or hear about on the boards. I did the takes and puts carefully and posted the actions. I carefully shipped out the pass. It was a success – I was hooked at that point. This site has always been my home-base, I began to explore the other boards.
Joined most of them – using the same nick name – I decided to always use the same nickname for simplicity and credibility. In November last year our family had a major issue and I experienced an emotional /nervous break down we could not even round up food and I lost it totally. Some of the guys here helped us beyond words at that time.
The entire segment turned into a BB fiasco across a couple of the other boards. Through that whole incident the guys here at CP where kind and caring it really impacted me and my family in a way I cannot truly explain.

To be continued.

The difference time can make (part2)

Lesions I learned. Included how to package cigars for shipping – how to balance the takes and puts without “raping a box”.

When I first started here I really thought it was so cool to receive packages from the great folk here. I was a Mooch, to a couple of guys I may still be that but can’t please everyone. It was through a few of the packages that I received my first Cuban cigar. Jeff Thank you!
It got to a point where I was doing some rather one sided actions in passes.
The cigars I had were not the same quality as the ones I wanted to try, and eventually the guys here pointed it out, they were not mean or anything but I certainly felt rather bad for doing that type of thing. I deleted about 100 or so posts I made (I was ashamed of being CP’s Dog Rocket boy) A nick name I gave myself later in humor over the situation.
It was this point when I had a change of thinking seriously it was all about the Cigars for a while, but now it was not about cigars any longer. It was about the people!

Once I learned what is right and wrong it didn’t take me long to go back and look at my pass actions and it was then that I sent out some make up packages to the guys who I did not do my best when I had there passes. It was a lesion needed to be learned by me. I also learned that there are many people out there who’s intentions are not good, and they will do what they can to benefit from good folks online, I no longer desired to be “a mooch” it was no longer appealing to me.

I wrote reviews as I tried the cigars and that was a good thing to do, my first review was about a Dominican un-banded bundled stick, then a Rosa Cuba. Today I can go and read those reviews and actually see the progression from a newbie to cigars boards to were I am today.

Today it truly is about the people and our relationships; the trust among the members is not equaled in life in many places. I am ever grateful to those of you, who tolerated my learning curve, and I must admit – I too can now show that tolerance to others with hope that they too may learn, yet I will share my lesions with them when ever I have a chance.

I have tried so many types of cigars since those first days and have developed a pretty decent knowledge base about the cigar industry. I have met the manufacturers of a few brands and have mad life long friends whom I care about and love as I do my own family.

The question was asked?
What do you think now after being here for a while?
You all now know what I think and believe.
I thank each of you.

Mike, Congratulations on your Anniversary. I can only hope that I can be counted in your list of friends. I also hope that the lessons learned by you can be of help to myself and other newbies on this board and others. I think that you are at a stage in your Gardom that others listen when you talk. I for one respect you and your oppinions, and I do not think I am alone.

Thank you for the help and support that you have given me since I have been here, I hope it made me a better passer. I know it introduced me to better smokes, for which I thank you.

Congrats Mike....... I think you have made it to that point where its not about the cigars. A lot of people never reach that level. Glad to call you a friend.

Way to go there Mike!!

And a very good point you make...it's all about friends being friends. The cigars are only the catalyst that brings us together; it's the friendships that bind us.

You mean I gotta be FRIENDS with you guys too? ;) :0

Congratulations Mike!

I can relate to the way the guys here really pull for someone they don't really know. I can only hope a year from now, I'll be able to post all about how I fell apart and the people at cigarpass dot com were like a support group and kept me from breaking :)

Again, congrats on a great run buddy

Great post, Mike!

I feel the same way that you do.

The generosity of most of the people on this board is fantastic.

Jeff and MattR have been especially kind to me by providing friendship, advice, and trades for cigars that I have never experienced before. Thank you gentlemen!

I like the civility of Cigar Pass, versus the "flame wars" and rudeness which are the norm at some other websites.

Ladies and gentlemen are preferable to "cigar snobs."

It is an education, in more ways than one, being at Cigar Pass.

Happy Anniversary!

Sam

I agree, this board and group of people are far better than the other boards. This is why I call this board home.

Take care and I look forward to passin' with ya for a long time.
