This Bolivar PC is crazy good... the early 90's tobacco is some of the best ever...
Some argue that the early 70's strain of Cuban "black" tobacco was the best... and who can really argue with that? The problem is finding pristine boxes of 40 plus year old cigars. After the 70's, the blue mold disaster changed everything, more chemicals, different strains of tobacco and very low quality, caused the Cuban exports to drop to around $50 million cigars... it wasn't looking good. Enter Fransisco Padron... an economist by trade, brought in foreign investments for the first time since the embargo, and changed everything. By the late 80's, he had more than doubled output, perfected the blue mold resistant tobacco, and created a 3 year fermentation schedule before rolling the tobacco. By the early nineties, the quality was (said to be) the best ever... When Padron left in 94, Cuba couldn't handle the massive demand that was created, hired inexperienced rollers, used fresh tobacco for wrappers, created new strains of faster growing tobacco and the quality and construction took a nose dive. This is why you avoid 98 to 01 years. Since 2002, the quality has increased, and 2016 was one of the best years for quality, but the tobacco strain (since the late nineties) is different, and it just doesn't taste the same... If you can find any Cuban cigars from the early nineties, do not hesitate to "invest" in a box or two, and experience history at its finest...

A mid 90's Cohiba Lancero. I've said it once, I'll say it again..... Thin ring gauges are where it's at!! A great wrapper makes a cigar and too big of an RG can overshadow on some cigars.
