Turning useful threads into articles

This forum has a ton of useful information, and I have been thinking about the idea of making CP even more of a cigar resource. There are a lot of threads which provide a ton of useful information. I'd like to do some collaborative brainstorming, and come up with a few hot topics that we can turn into pages linked off the homepage.

One example I can provide is the Coolerdor thread... I decided to take the thread awhile back and compile all of the useful information, and create its own page from the homepage, here it is: http://www.cigarpass.com/coolidor.shtml

I'm thinking we'll have a topic on 1.) proper storage, 2.) humidification, 3.) cigar flavors/tastes - and so on.

There is software available which helps automate this process, allowing everyone to contribute information helping to create a full blown article/guide. They are called "wiki's" - see www.wikipedia.org. Not sure if I want to go that route or not, but it is an option.

There is a ton of information hidden in these forums. CP is like a gold mine. I think it's time we harvest some of that information, start turning it into an informational guide, and place it on our homepage for easy reference.

The first step is to identify topics we want to discuss, and then linking to threads which discuss that topic. We will then extract all information from those threads, perhaps rewrite it, and turn it into an article.

If it helps, I'll gladly create another sub-forum just for this project. A forum where we can choose a topic, and collaborate on it all together. That way they won't get lost in the Lobby.

Anyone can help find relevant topics. If possible, it would be nice to get some writers on board. People who can help take the information gathered from the threads, and turn it into an article. It's easy to do... I'll take care of turning the article into a webpage.

What do you guys think?

It certainly has been for ME, but sometimes, theres so much information, that the search feature needs a search feature!

This is a GREAT idea.

An article on the major growing regions and countries would also be useful, perhaps.

Though we are already blessed with an excellent format here at CP, there is always room for improvement. Change is always good. I like the idea!

A couple that come into mind for me:

celo vs no celo
seasoning a humi

I think those could probably be covered in the topics you listed though.

When the server crashed was the first time I've looked at the front page in I don't know how long. :laugh:
 
That is a great idea Rod.
There is a wealth of information here on CP, but sometimes it is a little difficult to find.
Condensing some of the most requested information as articles is a good idea.

I'm not sure if this would be politically correct, but there has been a lot of research on "fake" cigars over the years.
Turing this into an article (or series of articles) might be a good idea.
 
If this happens we'll have to find something else to poke the newbies about!

I was thinking we should also have a section dedicated to Cuban cigars, talk about fakes, etc... Wilkey created the "letters" thread awhile back, while it's currently hidden, I would be all for turning that thread into an article as well. Nothing wrong with discussing the legalities of Cuban cigars.
 
One more thing...
We should have some sort of peer review group to review articles prior to being posted.

If nothing else to make sure the grammar is correct. :whistling: ;)

A wiki format could be good as it allows anyone given access to add to the information, but it is also another thing to moderate and maintain.
This is a great idea though.

Don't forget the pipe smokers. I know we're relatively few comparatively, but there's a lot of passion among us.

I'll gladly volunteer to compile an article or three (on any topic needed). I've got a lot of free time at night since I don't really sleep.

I love the idea of a cigar wiki. Wikipedia is open source. We use it (inside our firewall only) as a storage place for much of our knowledge base.
 
I think it is a great idea, and something I have actually hoped/wished would be available.

I would like to see some real in depth knowledge of aging.

All the aspects, advantages, results, time period, temperature.

What, if any differance between long term aging at variious RH levels. For instance, the 65 crowd; then those who swear a cigar loses oils below 69, and finally Oliva who states that cigars should be aged w/o cello, 20% more volume than cigars for air, and above 70%. What is the real justification for these opinions.

Too bad no Empirical data is given with a lot of the arguments I've seen.

Also good sources of supply for built in humidors. How to cool, maintain humidity, Excellent Hygrometers, you know, just exactly what is "state of the art"

Solving Cigar problems.
