So the wrapper adds most of the flavor to a cigar, right? And most, if not all cigars have one leaf as the wrapper right? So then why doesn't anyone just add another leaf to the wrapper? Wouldn't that increase the flavor you get from the wrappers? I could see some one like Rocky, or CAO doing something like this. And I'm not talking about barber pole cigars, I'm talking about two wrappers of the same type leaf. Any thoughts on this?

It really messes with the profile and strength of the cigar. The numbers I usually hear are around 50% of the flavor comes from the wrapper. Different flavors also come from different parts of the cigar, so you would be overpowering something.

Punch makes a double maduro wrapper Rothschild that is quite tasty IMO.

I thought that this had been done. CX2 and MX2 by CAO are twice the wrapper leaves. I'm not too sure but I believe 3X has been done too.

Not exactly... what CAO did is basically an interesting marketing technique. The second "wrapper" is actually the binder. They may very well use maduro/cameroon leaf for the binder but the quality of the leaf isn't quite up there with wrapper quality tobacco leaf. It'd be too expensive if it were.

I thought those were binder and wrapper which leads to the 'X2'. Is that the same thing as two wrappers?

I fell for CAO's marketing scheme. Per Moki's posts, the CX2 and MX2 do not have two wrappers of the same leaf.

I don't know if it was a marketing scheme. It was pretty clear (to me at least) that it was wrapper and binder of the leaf, either Cameroon or Maduro. I don't recall ever seeing anything that suggested it was two wrappers.

Do a search on CAO MX2 and you will find any number of cigar web sites that list that cigar as "having two wrappers". Granted, this is their issue, not CAO's, but the reason I stated it's a marketing concern is that it's pretty common for cigars to use the same leaf as binder and wrapper.

Opus X cigars, for instance, any Opus X Rosado wrapper that isn't good enough aesthetically to be wrapper ends up being binder for the cigars. Same thing with Padron and their cigars.

I stand corrected. Never realized that.

Even on the CAO website itself, it's confusing:

"Columbian and Nicaraguan tobaccos bound together in flawless harmony with two Cameroon wrappers is more than just a cigar... first ever cigar that binds with a Cameroon and wraps with a Grade One aged Cameroon."

The RP Fusion has two wrappers, rather than one wrapper and one binder leaf.

<<Rocky Patel has done it again! The Rocky Patel Fusion is a first for Rocky's brands, featuring two flavorful wrappers fused into one exceptional premium cigar.

The wrapper of the cigar is the most important component when it comes to adding the flavor and personality of the smoke. It is the leaf that receives the most care and attention and ultimately makes or breaks a fine cigar. The Rocky Patel Fusion is breaking new ground by reminding aficionados why Rocky’s cigars are considered the best in the world.

The Fusion starts with a flavorful Habano wrapper that conceals a second and equally flavorful Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, which is used as the binder. These two exquisite leaves are masterfully blended with a mix of Nicaraguan, Honduran and Cameroon fillers to make a cigar that has received unrivaled attention from enthusiasts all over the world.>> ref: cigar.com

FWIW, I really like the RP Fusions. A tasty, quality smoke, IMHO.

I totally agree, very tasty, but I think the Double Maduro refers to the color of the wrapper, not the number of wrappers used. I think Double Maduro is just darker.

Box Split?? $107 for a box of 50

IMO
Some of the "Double" brands use a wrapper and a binder-- perhaps of the same type, certainly of different quality, but if its a matter of flavor profile, a leaf that doesn't look good enough to be a wrapper and so is called a binder should still fit the bill.

Some use two true wrappers, of the same general type (Cam or maduro etc, etc) but not necessarily the same leaf--maybe a Nic maduro outside and broadleaf inside, for example.

Some use the barberpole method, not just for the aesthetics, but to get the flavor of 2 true wrappers on the cigar.

Bottom line, as usual, is that it matter less what they call it, and it matters more what it tastes like...TO YOU. I don't think any of the manufacturers are trying to fool or confuse anyone with their "Doubles". So, if the IDEA catches you, try one. If you like it, there you are. If not, one down and a million others to try.

By the way, I wouldn't be me if I didn't mention that we produce a line of these type of cigars, in Maduro/Maduro, Cameroon/Cameroon and even Conn. shade/Conn. Broadleaf versions. But I won't name them, cause I'm not trying to sell them here.
