UN General Assembly votes overwhelmingly to condemn US trade embargo on Cuba.

Too bad we don't listen to the UN anymore.

It seems that the UN has voted to condemn the embargo for about 19 years in a row. This LA Times article is pretty interesting.

New Story

You know what I love, that we're the ONLY country in the world that has an embargo agains them, but it's that embargo that is the cause of all their problems. Right...

Nice link Larry!

Excellent link and yes we should lift the embargo for those very reasons and expose the leadership of the island for what it is. Take away all their excuses and then let the world judge.

Good point, I hadn't thought of it that way. A friend of mine believes that the embargo has hurt their tourism income because of course us Americans can't go there and we are so close. I'm not sure I believe that has had much of a real impact on their economy. I know this is probably a taboo subject since it is discussing politics but I'm curious what our Canadian and European friends think?

I do think that the counterfeiters will have a field day when the embargo is finally lifted. Those glass top Cohiba boxes will be everywhere :sign:

I honestly don't think there would be much more counterfeiting than what's going on now, but it would be REALLY nice to buy from a license dealer and not have to worry about fakes. Oh well, it won't happen this year for sure since the embargo was officially extended this year already.

I think that a complete lifting of the embargo, or even just travel restrictions for Americans would be a big boon for Cuba financially. No doubt about it. With Cuba being so close and Caribbean vacations so popular among American's Cuba would definitley benefit over time. We focus on cigars, but revenue from cigars is only a fraction of the economy. That said...do I think we should lift the embargo? Only if political concessions are made by Fidel and Raul...

Maybee this is a stupid question but I'm still goin' to ask.
Why is there an embargo against Cuba and not against , for example, China?
Both are Communist countries and dictatorships so what is the difference?

The U.N. also just made Tinkerbell the fairy the new "Ambassador of Green".

Excellent question. The embargo was placed when Cuba allied with the USSR and started receiving Soviet missles aimed at the US. It was an immediate threat based on their proximity, not to mention that they allied themselves with our cold war enemy. Why it has lasted, politics, plain and simple. There are still a very large group of Cuban Americans (and others) who feel that the embargo should stand until either the Castros are out of power or significant human rights changes are made.

The deal with China is a whole different ball of wax (so to speak). Unfortunately the US has relied very heavily on loans from China to pay for our uncontrolled spending this last decade. We are in debt to them to the tune of trillions of dollars, and that number continues to grow.

I fear I am traveling into the dark waters of political discussion so I will stop there. There is a lot of info out there about the embargo.

Holy sh*t Alan, you weren't kiddin;! :0

Tinkerbell named U.N. Ambassador of Green

Tinker Bell, the beloved pixie from Walt Disney’s Peter Pan and her own line of animated DVD movies, has received a unique honor for a cartoon by becoming a United Nations Honorary Ambassador of Green.

The honor was bestowed on the character, who stars in the just-released DVD and Blu-ray feature Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure, at a ceremony Sunday at the United Nations building in New York by Kiyo Akasaka, the U.N. under-secretary-general for communications and public information.

Also attending were Lost Treasure director Klay Hall, producer Sean Lurie, and voice actors Mae Whitman (Tinker Bell) and Raven Symone (Iridessa)

Tinkerbell is a babe. Besides, she makes my crank look bigger.

Doc.

The LA Times article tells us about the billions of aid we have sent Cuba. Total rubbish. That "aid" never reaches the general public, it is for the lying thieving administrators of that country to do with whatever they please. The countless amount of containers of food that has been sent by local churches and subsidised food sent by the US government (or its intermediaries) should be appear on everyones ration card (Carta de Abastecimiento) but never does. As a matter of fact the ration card is getting reduced every year. Where does the food end up? In the government owned stores with outrageous pricing. For example... Chickens get split up into two parts: 1) white meat for restaurants and hotels 2) Dark Meat for the government owned stores that can be purchased at $2.35/lb CUC or $2.94/lb USDollar. Now I ain't fond of dark meat but I can get bags and bags of it at $0.19/lb locally. Recently I saw in many downtown Havana shops "Mojo Criollo" made by Badia in Miami. Mojo Criollo is a liquid seasoning made of grapefruit juice, spices and garlic to season pork. The 750ml bottle sells locally $1.49, in Cuba it was $3.85 CUC or $4.81 USDollar. I have 2 questions: How the flip did it get there and who the flip down there has $5 for a bottle of grapefruit juice? To me it's embarrasing to see these things so out of proportion, but that is what is going on down there. John

That just amazes me! I wonder why the UN doesn't look at this before condemning US policy. Politics, politics, and more politics I guess.

The U.N. is anti-U.S. IMHO. We give them sovereingn tax free land in Manhattan on the water...let their dignataries get along in this city parking anywhere they please without financial penalty, give them diplomatic immunity, the presence of all these people driving up Manhattan rental rates in Tudor City and the surrounding area, residents of NYC and New York state pay for the crowd control and police escorts and traffice redirection everytime they have a big gathering, deal with the congestion in the streets they create in lost time a productivity...and the U.N. leaders don't even like the U.S. Again with not to get political, but that is just my own impression. Best to take back the land and have them move the U.N. somewhere else.
