I'm proud of my service, but until recently, didn't qualify for either VFW or American Legion. For whatever reason, both have recently opened up membership for some of us "cold warriors" and I'm considering membership. So far, I see it as choosing between Ford and Chevy. I suspect a few of my brothers here have some input on the matter.

Bruce, I'm a member of both. They both have their pluses and minuses. I would check on which is more involved with the community and has a strong membership base. Other than that check and see who has the best operation overall, as they are always looking for members to volunteer for fundraisers and the such.

Good luck and let me know which you chose.

I am also a member at both but i find myself going to the VFW more often. The one i go to has a lot more members my age and were in the same time i was (Gulf War). Also the VFW's around here are more involved in the community.

I'm looking for a number of reasons, but primarily, we (as in wifey and me) are searching for a social outlet. Wife's aunt has cooked for the VFW in Proctor VT for the past 45 years. A good bar and a passable kitchen are a must!

Fer Christ's sake Bruce, it's unfair to the rest of the U.S to have to live up to Vermont standards. You'll just have to settle for less. By the way I belong to both, but never go except on Memorial Day, and Veteran's Day.

Doc.

I belong to the American Legion, but it's affiliated with the local that i'm a member of, seems as though the VFW is more community minded. Just my 2 cents.

Growing up my family was very active in the Legion and the Legion Auxiliary. My folks signed me up after completing basic in 1997 on "Gulf War" eligibility. It never made sense to me, but it was nice to belong. Now that I'm an OIF/OEF vet it makes it seem like I've earned it.

My wife was in the Army during the late nineties, so once we were married my folks signed her up for the Legion AND the Auxiliary. Again, it was on “Gulf War” eligibility.

My father is a member of and active in both. I think it all depends on your local post. The differences between the Legion and the VFW are very minor at the local level.

I am a member of neither, I was but got tired of the hours of "Glory Days" stories. Besides that, I'm anti-social to begin with.

At least you aren't as bad as Neal.

I love the sea stories and the glory days - especially those from the greatest generation.

Bruce any organization that would have Ray, you or me is suspect :whistling:

American Legion but our local post closed down around 9 years ago :(

I don't think you can go wrong either way Bruce. We have a great Legion in the town where our unit is, so that is where we all go. There is a VFW as well, but they don't put much effort into making it a nice place.

In short, I'd look at both and see which seems to be the friendliest place to be part of.

I dont know what one you should join but I just have to tell all of you that have servered a big Thanks you!

I don't know about you all but the Legion in my town is a "thug club" 3 nights a week shootings, stabbings drugs busts all the time. Kinda sucks IMHO.
