No, they keep it pretty secure. One of the reasons is that the fuel used in the orbiter is highly flamable and highly toxic which is why you see all the large hoses attached to it after it lands. They are used for evacuating the tanks for safety .

I have been inside the Egress vehicle (red and white train car looking vehicle) which is basically a large ambulance for the crew to get checked out in after landing.
