Awful weekend. Dog (has epilepsy) went to emergency clinic after 4 seizures on Weds. Got him back on Fri night. Dog was in good mood, but declined fast. Rushed back to emergency clinic on Sunday with bloat, colon was totally filled with gas (the x-rays were ... um ... impressive) and hugely distended, spleen was enlarged, red blood cell count was down.
He doesn't tolerate dog food containing beef, which is in his file ... and, for the 2 days he was at the clinic, they fed him a mix of dry dog food containing beef and wet dog food containing beef. That plus the very low level of activity (he usually gets about 1-1/2 hrs of off-leash walking and chasing squirrels/birds/deer; at the clinic, he probably got about 15 minutes a day of slow-mo on-leash walking) seems to have come very close to doing him in.
Fortunately, we got a vet surgeon whom we know and trust on Sunday. She's opening up her own practise in South Philly. We're switching as soon as she opens her doors. We don't think that she'll be right 100% of the time, but we're pretty sure that she'll tell us and make it right when she isn't, which is more than we can say about the local emergency clinic...
