weight loss contest

I'm trying to get to 175# at 14% bf, currently 181 at 21%, so i figured let's make this fun w/ a contest.

Let's get 5-10 people to each throw in a 5'r of $10-15 sticks, and winner takes the pot.

Here's where it gets sticky, and can use some input:

1. How do you 'level' the playing field, ie someone very overweight will lose more weight faster, or someone that has not very far to go will lose it slower? Make the contest among similar bf% w/ similar goals? Also, should a independent party that is knowledgeable on this subject be the judge as to who takes the prize? Maybe b4 and after pics (i'm skeert to post a pic of my fat self). Age also needs to be factored in?

2. Do you do this on weight alone, or does BF % need to play into it, it's one thing to drop a bunch of weight, but it's harder to build muscle while burning fat.

3. How long should this contest go? I'm thinking 60 days, much longer than that it gets too strung out. Also thinking every week weigh in, and final results may need to be verified by a Dr. (mail / fax final results)?

Is this getting too complicated? I'm trying to make something fun but fair to all participants.

the problem with these kinds of contests is that 80% of the participants don't stick with it.

(80%) is being nice. :D

the cigars would be sent on the front side, so if everyone wanted to fall out, that's great :D

Age, height, body fat, weight, BMI.

The fairest way would be to see who can reduce their BMI by largest factor in relation to their original BMI. However, someone looking to lose 10-20 vanity pounds would have a large advantage over someone very overweight.

There's really no fair way to do it because one set of rules "rigs" it for fit/slightly overweight, whereas the another rigs it for the heavy set people.

Edit: You losing 6 pounds and dropping 7% BF won't be that difficult. Diet of tuna/chicken and a few other things and light-moderate cardio or free weights for 60 days would acheive that -- unless you are older or have metabolic deficiencies.

no my post was meant for someone who has lost an impressive amount of weight is all. nothing derogatory was intended or meant I apologize if it came out like that.

Come on Frank, we all know you're The Biggest Loser.

I think this is a good idea for a contest, be we need to keep in mind all types of participants. Body fat index is ok and all, but what if someone who has no idea where to even start getting in shape wants to participate??? this could also be a place for them to gain knowledge, motivation, and the personal gain they get might really be something.

If we get enough participants to do this, I believe I can judge this fairly, and at the same time offer some good solid advice on how to reach some goals in the gym.

Also women tend to lose weigh slower than men. I do however, think that 2 categories should exist at least. One being a contest for the very heavy people and the second for the less than 50lbs overweight people. The sticks sent in could be divided between the two groups as winning prizes.

Just a thought

I would be willing to be in the contest and I have no problem with before and after doctor authetication (I friggin' live there).

You're right about that Brandon, BMI is relatively useless IMO, it would say that Emmitt Smith is obese...

It might get too complicated to have too many 'divisions', and there might not be too many women in the contest. Maybe some type of handicap system to reflect the really big folks, the women, and the people that are more 'average' in terms of weight to lose (not sure average is the right word).

This has potential to be informative, fun, and obviously healthy. This could be done w/ out the cigars, but w/ a reward of a sack full of good cigars, it might tend to keep people involved.

Before and after pics that are kept private except to the judge would be a way to keep honest folks honest. If at the end, you wanna show the forum the new you, then that's cool, but i ain't putting a pic of my fat ass on the forum...

I like the idea of a contest with a prize, it keeps it interesting. Consider percentage of weight lost (this doesn't fair well for someone like Gator that only wants to lose 6 pounds... In the words of Curly of City Slickers, I crap bigger than you). Maybe a combination of percentage of weight and body fat lost.

Count me in.

I was on another board a looong while back that started this type of contest.

Just some ideas to throw around.

Each participant posted a few pictures, namely full frontal, and profile while holding a most current newspaper such as NY Times with the date shown. They each started a small journal of how their daily activities changed, what they ate, if they exercised, etc. Depending on how long the contest was, some participants posted periodical pictures of again full frontal and profiles while holding a most current newspaper. The contest on the other board went on for 5 months, so their picture postings were bi-weekly, others only had the before and after pictures.

Even though this is a competition, encouragement from everyone including the participants were extremely appreciated.

Another road bump is the very idea you guys are thinking on now. How can you measure the success from person A who has very different goals from person B? Well, one factor would be who stayed true to their diets/exercise methodology and who strayed? Did person C go above and beyond his goals and built a body worthy of the Sandow? Is this a time based contest where the first one to get to their ideal BMI takes the winnings?

I would say percentage of body weight lost would be a good indicator. Hell, if it works for "Biggest Loser", then it works for me. I'd be in if this starts. I need to slim down before the Domincian Republic in April.

Well hell, let's do it, let's run with this unless someone shoots some holes in it and we need to tweak it. Let's start the contest Jan. 21...

1. limited to 15 contestants, entry fee is 5 $10-$15 cigars, to be sent to Hillbilly Steaks, the judge of the contest. Contestant is not officially entered until HS has the sticks. Sign up deadline is January 16 @ 5pm, limited to established members in good standing as honesty will be huge in this contest being fair and a success, and if you're not established, how do we know you're honest?

2. Since it so hard to nail the guidelines down precisely that will cover everyone, HS (Erick) will judge the winner, it's his decision that we all will live by, he has no dog in the fight and is knowledgeable on this subject, and is a very honest person.

3. To enter, you must post your sex, age, height, weight, BF%, goal(s), general description of your lifestyle (current diet, exercise history, etc...), and pm a 'before' pic to Erick ( i'd say a front and side pic, Erick said he prefers nude pics  ). It would be helpful to list your 'path' to weight reduction / improved health. Contest will run for 60 days, so set your goals accordingly.

4. Weigh in will be every week, post weights in this thread, as well as how well your followed your 'path'. Feel free to post pics as you make improvement, posting pics is totally up to the contestants though.

I think this covers it, but i'm sure there will need to be a few tweaks. This is not a competition as much as it is a way to improve ones health, with a nice little prize of premium sticks.

Here's a sample of the way i think the 'entry' should look:

Gator

Stats: 4' 1", 225 lbs, 65% BF

Goals: to get down to 110 #, 20% BF, and be able to walk down the street naked and attract fine women.

The Path: I plan to reach my goal by going on a strict diet of bugs and pretzels, limiting my daily intake to 1500 calories per day. I eat too much junk food and drink too many yoohoos, so i will cut the junk and yoohoos out and replace with fruit and nuts. I plan to do cardio 6 days a week, and strength train 4 days a week

Current lifestyle: I never exercise, i lay around all day, drink yoohoos and surf for cigar porn, basically sedentary.

Lets get healthy!

Currently we have fatken, jetdr, and myself as 'in'.

Here's my stats and goals:

Stats: 42yo, 5' 8", 181 lbs, 22% BF

Goals: get to 170 lbs, 15% BF, which would involve burning fat and building muscle, as well as hopefully lowering my resting heart rate, BP, and improving cholesterol (my dad had 6 bypasses at 60, so i'm in the high risk category). In the past, when i've been leaner and exercising regularly, i feel MUCH better, so that's another goal, feel good and energized.

The Path: No 'diet' so to speak, just cutting out bad foods, replacing with healthy, avoiding high saturated fat foods and simple carbs, as well as eating 5 times a day. Shooting for 75-100 grams of lean protein per day, and as much fiber as i can. Will do cardio 6 days a week, consisting of 20 min of high intensity cardio (keeping heart rate between 140 and 170, and daily 30min walks w/ the wife. Weight training every other day, pretty much following the Body for Life HIT program.

Current lifestyle: Usually cardio 3 times a week, i stay active during the day w/ working at the nursery. My diet is my downfall, eat too much bad, not enough good. Have been on and off the alcohol wagon, currently on the wagon, i keep fighting moderation, so it's time for me to quit fighting it and just stop alcohol.
