First, I would like to thank Alan for his help and advice via PM.

I started off with a mild aromatic from a B&M out near Souldog, and I must say that this is definitely something you have to learn to do! I kept reading how pipe smoking is an art, but you really don't appreciate it until you actually attempt it. It was certainly pleasant, though the constant relights made me burn through a ton of matches, haha! Per the guide stickied up top, I started with just a quarter bowl to begin the break in process. Next week, another bowl! :D

Damn Charles! I've been dying to try the pipe for about a year now, but knowing me (being all or nothing) it won't be cheap.

So I'm trying to be disciplined and wait until my wife graduates from college in eight months.........you just made it all that much harder.

Haha, sorry John! :D

Willpower man, willpower! At least it isn't far out from her graduating, and an early congrats to her!

Charles I'm gona go ahead and tell you... This is even a more slippery slope than cigars are. There is a bowl packing method that i tried about a month ago, that really works for me. Very few if any relights.

Try this, it works for me!

Happy smoking!

Oooooh, your woman finds out, and she gonna' kick yo ass!!!

Thanks Keith, I'll give that a try! :D

Nah, I blamed it on you... She actually is ok with it now that I pointed out the cost of the tobacco compared to cigars.

Welcome aboard Charles. It is getting cool enough now that I'm about to break out the pipes again. For whatever reason I can't get into it when it's warm out. I've been strictly cigars since April or so. This is a wonderful hobby and there are lots of people here that will help you along, they sure did with me.

As Clint said, weather is starting to get cooler so I too will be breaking out the 'ol corn cob and toasting a few bowls.

Thank you for the link! I'm also new to the pipe smoking experience, but loving it.

Anytime. Have you tried it yet? If so, how's it working for you?

Yes, this method is working great for me - especially now that I'm getting a better feel for how much to dry the tobacco before smoking.

I need to stay out of this room...something else for me to get addicted to and for the wife to beat me for :whistling:

My wife likes it! It's cheaper and smells better than cigars!

I would agree, when it comes to price and smell it is cheaper than cigars, at least once you get past the initial investment in the pipe. I only have one while pipe since I don't smoke it as much. Picking up a good pipe is worth the bit of extra money you would spend up front.

You can pick up good tobacco from your local cigar shop for a few dollars an ounce which will last you a decent number of times. For 15 bucks you can get a good variety and have tobacco to last a long time.

The only problem my wife has with it is that she says it makes me look like an old man... but that doesn't bother me too much..

Heh, my wife says I look like an old man with the pipe too. On the other hand, an added benefit when smoking in public:

Cigar = nasty sneers
Pipe = "Hey that smells good" or "Wow, I haven't seen someone smoking a pipe in years!"

I have had people come up to me in a Casino, while I am smoking my pipe.

I always get that sinking feeling when I feel a tap on the shoulder and hear someone say "Excuse me sir..."

But its always followed with "I love that smell". Some have told me it reminds them of their father, etc.

As mentioned its nice to have people around you smile at you instead of sneer at you like when I smoke a cigar.
