Yeah you CAN use kitty litter. I've used both exquisicat and litter pearls. Neither one works anywhere close to as good as heartfelt. You will need to put more of them and use a shallow dish so you get as much surface area as possible.
Heartfelt beads or some other brand of silicone humidity bead with a rating of 65 - 70% would be much more recommended. For small humidors go with the crystal gel. It can't be beat in desktops.
