What kind of stock do you keep?

I haven't been smoking cigars all that long, and I mostly keep a stock of cigars I have smoked before and know I like. Once in a while I'll get something new to see if I like it. What kind of stock do you all keep? I see a lot of you always trying something new.

Since I'm rather noobish, I love to try new 'gars. But at the same time I keep a stock of my familiars on hand.

So I guess you could say I'm a mix.

I'm with Brick. Since I am a newbie, I am smoking all the new ones that I can try. Aside from a very basic few, I cannot say yet what I like.

For me, the trick is to document what you like in some type of journal. You can either buy one, make one or find them online. This way I have a reference point.

Psst. Don't forget to introduce yourself in the Introduction thread!

:D Good question.
I like to keep boxes of what I like. Hemingway,s and Padron the rest is all samplers and sticks. Trying new stuff is not just a newbie issue. We all like to try smokes.

I stock boxes only of what have proven to be "good for me." I also stock singles of these same smokes to enjoy or share. Everything else is in the "to try" loose sticks trays.

Wilkey

I buy mostly 5ers and if I like at least 3 of the cigars I buy a box.

Mostly I have a bunch of different sticks at any one time and 1 or 2 boxes max.

When one of the boxes is almost gone I order another but usually something different. I also always try to save 1 or 2 sticks from every box to smoke at a later date.

I almost always have a full humidor with a good selection of smokes I like.

Hard to tell from one if it's going to be something I really like. I try to buy 5'ers if it's something I'm interested in.

If I'm interested in it, I'll buy a box or two so I can smoke / age them a bit (like Padron 2000 maddies; my "go to" smoke). Also, I often split boxes / cabs of 50 with a BOTL when I find a good deal on something I like.

Bottom line - If I like a stick enough to smoke it regularly, I buy (at least) a box.

As far as stock, I've got a 100 Ct. desktop and two 52 Qt coolers full, so you do the math....

Do you try to smoke something different from your stash every day BBS? Or do you stick to a certain rotation?

Your method is what I am trying to work up to so I'd be interested in how you choose your daily smokes.

Lately I'll buy a box to smoke that I know I like. I supplement that with single purchases that I try to keep around :)

I'm not sure I like this plan as much as I used to.

Case in point:

Bought a box of Don Pepin Garcias a few weeks ago. I've had two or three out of the box that were KILLER! The rest have not been so great. This probably just means they need to sit in the humidor for awhile and age out some more.

The problem is then, how do you smoke stuff that has been aged awhile when you can't really buy it that way? Buy a whole bunch of young stuff one month and smoke some of it while keeping the majority intact for aging? As someone who has never really had more than one full box in the humidor at a time, I need some guidance. Any suggestions?

I'll throw my 2 cents in on that one Wurm. :)
I treat my rotation like I do the smokes I buy. When I open the humi and catch the smell I get the flavor for what strikes me. No real method at all. I will go theough periods where I will smoke just padrons and sometines Fuentes for days on end then other weeks I gothrough my singles and don't touch my boxes. Call it fly by the seat of my pants!

I have boxes in stock of my favorite cigars. :)

CC, you got me back onto Serie A.
Now I have to thank you for the good advice in this thread, I'll be sure to
follow you and stock up on YOUR favorite cigars

Depends on my "mood"...

Some days are "let's try something new" and some days are "...been a busy day so let's go with something that I know and like..." days. Time is a bit of a factor for me. Weeknights I usually get one good smoke in, last thing of the day, though the weekends are a bit more lax. Weeknights I'll usually have a "go to" smoke which is one that's a proven great smoke, though very often not a "high end" smoke; Padron 2000 / LaLuna / etc...

Today, for example, I've already had a San Cristobal Principie (AM with coffee...jury is still out), just finished a Por Larranga Petite Corona (getting better with age) and tonight after dinner I'll have something great (just got back from the market with some great steaks for me and Ms. B.B.S.) so that'll get followed up with something really special. It's a nice time for me and my wife to retire to the deck and share some time with a cocktail and a smoke (she's a cigarette smoker).

Long and short of it is - what do you like? If there's a certain stick you always like, always tastes good, that's worth a box or two. Like a dependable old friend, as it were. If you like them but are "trying to decide" that means you probably want half a box or so, to really give it a good evaluation. I've never had a problem finding a BOTL buddy willing to split a box with me. If it's something you are only curious about, get a 5'er and take them out for a 'test drive'...

My $00.02 - FWIW.

Cheers - B.B.S.

Thanks BBS, that answered my question perfectly, now the next step is to finally have enough stock to be able to do that

You should try out the Newbie Sample Trade Thread, you'll get a great selection of smokes, and end up finding daily and special occasion cigars that you'll want to get boxes of :D . Then you'll find other ones you like, and buy more boxes. And then you'll find some smokes on sale, and buy more boxes.....well, it never ends  !

Automated Response-

Gunpowder is currently in his cigar warehouse. He will respond to your post when he returns from viewing his boxes and individual sticks.... if he can find the exit.

I have a few hundred cigars on hand at any given time. As to stock. I like to keep at least two full boxes of Padron 5000 Maduros and two full boxes of La Gloria Cubana Serie R #5 in the humidor at all times. I likely have a few hundred assorted others.

Lately I have been doing so many trades/box splits my 300 count humidor is full with fivers, singles, and the remnants of the boxes I have bought over the last year. Cliff's notes version: Gurkha Ledgend, Gurkha XX, Torano Tribute 2k4, La Flor Dominicana DL chisel, Litto Gomez chisel, Fuente/Opus X various, Padron various, ISOM various, and Tatuaje various.

Since I'm a relative noobie I've been trying everything I can get my hands on but I'm starting to gravitate to certain brands that have "wow'd me". So far every Cuban I've tried has been great, and Padron and Fuente for the non-Cubans. I've also had Gurkha recently which I really enjoyed. I think I'll be slowly weeding out the stuff I don't really get anything out of and sticking to the brands that I've really liked. So eventually I'll have a collection of only a limited variety.
