What SMOKING music are you listening to? (2026)

Live Friday

The Kinks, 'One for the Road' (1980)

The early 80's were a resurgence for the Kinks. Oft considered a godfather of both Heavy Metal and Punk with You Really Got Me Now and All Day And All Of The Night the Kinks really were the English Music Hall version of a rock band that happened to come up with singles outside that genre. Muswell Hillbillies is a prime example of a music hall band doing country. while Arthur is about as English as you can get. This double live album was recorded during the Low Budget album tour which is why there are 5 songs from that record. The rest are an overview of the previous 16 years of their career. Like many of the double albums the first CD release was 1 song short but the releases after 1994 have all the songs. So far there have been no remasters or extended versions although there was a VHS and DVD version released with about half the songs.

The DVD is below.

I played BabyMetal last week for WW and have been in a female Japanese heavy metal rabbit hole which led me to Band-Maid. Sorta like the Monkees but different.

History, trivia, music - the full 9 yards today.

Band-Maids are a sub-genre of hard rock/heavy metal found only in Japan so far. The have their roots in cafe maids which first showed up in Tokyo about 25 years ago. Cafe Maids came from the Okatu culture which encompasses Hentai and Manga. Originally these cafes were places that fans could see their favorite maids (maids are a really big in that genre) but soon abandoned the pure cosplay aspect and the girls playing maids have their own identity. These maids would open the door of the restaurants with "Welcome Home Master" and women and girls of all ages were princesses. It is all rated G as there is no touching, personal information, or pictures that haven't been paid for. Maids do things like draw pictures with condiments, sing, cast spells to make the food better and take pictures with clients. These gatherings are called Services.

Well about 10 years later somebody thought the girls in maid outfits playing hard rock would be a good idea. For Japan it seems to be working.

Now for the Monkees part - Band Maid is entirely a made from scratch band thought up by promoters in 2013. For the first 3 years they didn't play any of their own songs. Not that unheard of as the first 3 Rolling Stones records released in the UK had no original songs on them. Unlike the Monkees these 5 girls all played the songs from day 1. Since 2016 everything recorded has been original material. For at least the last 8 years there have been English lyrics mixed in with the Japanese making for some interesting listening.

What makes this group pretty amazing is how late the lead, rhythm and bass guitarist started. they all had musical backgrounds but the lead guitarist didn't start playing guitar until she was 15 and the bassist was 14 but the rhythm guitarist didn't start playing until she was in the band for 2 years switching from backup vocalist. While the other girls are damn impressive it is the drummer who is like a female Keith Moon trying to kill her kit with a pair of sticks that caught my ear. She is the musical founder of the group..

While they weren't as heavy when they started as they are now these 5 women will rock you as hard as you want.

I went through a girl group phase probably late 80s or so and listened to a lot of Shonen Knife & a few other Japanese girl groups. There is some good stuff in there.
