What to do w/ old computer equipment?

What do you guys do with old CRT monitors and PC's? Paid $1800 for a Gateway about 7 years ago or so and now it's worth nothing.
 
The school Ric and I work for sometimes donates our old computers to various organizations such as churches or boys and girls clubs/ afterschool programs.

Other than that we just gut them for any parts that might be useful at some point and throw the rest in the trash.
 
I know it sounds painful, but most of the stuff turns out to be worthless after 7 years.

You could always pull the HD and wire it into your PC as a slave drive and use it for backups.
 
I pull the hard drives (if they're any good) and use them as a back up like smitty said. I have some old printers that are not worth fixing, I just haven't gotten around to throwing them out. I have two old towers and an old monitor or two in the attic and again, just haven't gotten around to tossing them.
 
I keep one as a backup computer in case of a crash. Im networked, so just need to turn it on.
 
Rod, I think nearly every big city school district has a program to get computers to disadvantaged kids/families, so that's one thing to look into.
I'm sure there are other groups, local or nationally, that do the same. Also, I think I've heard that Dell, maybe Gateway and HP take in old computers and refurbish them to donate.

Failing all that, they need to be recycled properly. Huge amounts of dangerous crap in CRTs and circuit boards.
 
Take the hard drive out and use it (can never have too much storage space), leave the rest on the curb, set up webcam and let everyone see who picks it up :p

Well, well, well...she lives...welcome back...you gonna stay this time?
 
I'd ebay it but it costs more to ship than it's actually worth. I just tossed up two Dell laptops on ebay tonight, and within 10 minutes I received 3 questions. Looks like I might sell 'em before the auction ends. :)
 
I rebuild them and then donate to whomever wants them. You can get a nice tax break doing that.
 
i have donated mine to some local charities who repair them and give them to the less fortunate (makes a nice tax deduction at the end of the year as well).
