So what do you think had a greater effect on your life today, World War 2 or the electric light?

Personally, the light has had a greater effect on me today. The first thing I did this morning was flip on a light. Within the first 15 minutes of being up, I turned on 4 different lights.

Though, I don't know where I'd be if it weren't for WWII and such. None of my immediate family was effected by WWII I'm sure it has effected me some how.

I chose World War II for a many reasons. Most of which are hard to comprehend.

I lost my Uncle Clarence who I never new. My father was not allowed to enlist because he was one of only two Sons and as farmers the military felt that his role on the farm was more vital. So had the table been turned I might not even be here. Try to wrap your head around that one.

Had the United States not entered the war causing the loss of my Uncle's and may other lives, life for all of us could be unfathomably different.

The electric light... Well I guess with out it we'd all be surfing in the dark. :p

Both of my Grandfathers were in WWII. One in the Army, one in the Navy, they both came home. Needless to say, I wouldn't be here right now if the outcome for either one of them had been different.

Althought it seems that the lightbulb has a more immediate effect on my daily life, I went with WWII.

It's funny, I was just visiting my grandfather last week and he was saying how if he hadn't come back from the war neither my father nor I would be here, and if he hadn't gone, or he hadnt returned when he did, who know's how that would have changed meeting my grandmother. It's weird to think about.

I come from a military family on both sides, and there is no denying that WWII had a huge impact on the world in all honesty, I would have to say that the electric light bulb has had an even bigger impact...at least in the industrialized world.

WWII had a greater affect, but the light bub has had a greater effect.

I took the meaning of the poll as the allies winning WWII vs. the light bulb, and as such don't think the light bulb can even really compare. For starters people had artificial light sources prior to the invention of the light bulb. Also I think if Edison didn't invent the light bulb, someone would have within the same time period. WWII on the other hand is the last time this country was unified, and I can't even put to words what the world might have looked like if it were not for WWII. For me freedom wins hands down.

I think they are two very different comparisons. Both have cost many peoples lives. Both very important times in history. The electrical field has cost many unknowing souls their lives. Just trying to make a living for their families. They had no idea of the hazards. Times have changed so much regarding safety and training. But we need to remember that there were many that lost their lives in the electrical field.(Transmission and Distribution) We take it for granted having our lights on. Great topic AVB!

Good point. I think that the two things are not comparable. The war had a huge affect on American society, economics, and global influence, BUT I like being able to read after dark

with out electicity, you have no radar. With no light bulbs, you would bave no head-lights no beacons, no runway lights. With out electicity you would not have computers, or NASA. With out light bulbs, you would not have airplanes, TVs or flashlights. I have to pick the light bulb. However, WWII did bring the US out of the Great Depression, turned Japan into an electronics Giant (but again- needs electricity) and turned Germany back to a Luxury Automobile superpower. Not to mention, WWII created the Russian Bear and nuclear weapons. Still, not of that is possible with out the base benefits of electicity and the light bulb. pardon the misspellings.

The Allies winning WWII was definitely the more important of the two. I'd look goofy wearing leiderhosen and would rather speak English than German anyday. But they do have some great beer.
