Hello,

I am an old guy turned newbie because I haven't been around CP for a while. Not only have I been away from CP, I smoked my first cigar in years last Thursday. ???

Years ago, I considered myself to be on the cutting edge of "cigars." How times have changed. I remember having a 150 quart coolerdor filled with hundreds of cigars, doing splits, 5'ers, passes, trades, bombs, etc. One divorce later, I'm trying to get back on my feet and also back into the good graces of CP.

Anyway, for the first time, I visited a local cigar store that recently opened. Keep in mind, I haven't visited any shops in several years.

I saw openly available for sale:

AF Sungrown
Padron Anniversary Maduro and Natty 1926 and 64
The funny shaped Hemmingway or Short Story - I don't know the difference
Between the lines

I didn't think about it until I had left, but I don't know if they had Opus X's.

5-10 years ago, the above cigars were not readily available. If available, they were kept out of public view and you had to be a regular customer and "know" someone to the allowed the opportunity to purchase them. I was really surprised to see the selection that was available to everyone. Maybe times have changed and the coveted cigars have changed.

Has the economy made these cigars more available? Are there other cigars that are "now" coveted? Has everyone lost the desire for the aforementioned cigars? What am I missing?

I asked the sales clerk (who isn't a cigar smoker) how they had such a great selection and she said, "we just order 'em and they come."

Maybe I'm behind the times... ya'll can let me know.

Thanks.

Economy has made these more readily available it seems. Fuente Anejo's, etc. seem to sit a bit longer and are not snatched up as quickly.

Padron has never been HTF as long as I have been buying them.

I don't chase them myself anymore, but Pete Johnson from Tatuaje seems to have the market cornered on HTF releases such as the Tatuaje Black and Halloween annual releases. Not to mention he does special releases specific to certain vendors that everyone seeks out.

If I happen to come across a box great, if not, I don't sweat it.

LOL! Sounds like you'll good advice from that store

Tatuaje and Viaje love to play the rare cigar game these days. Opus don't seem to be what they once were, at least in my estimation. For my money I'd rather have an Anejo or Don Carlos blend. One of my local shops used to keep their 1926 stock in the back room and you had to ask what they had in, but I go to a shop that doesn't do that and never has, so I'm not sure if that's the owner's preference or something that used to be quite common.

AF Don Arturo, Opus "Keeper of the Flame", GoF Serie B, Illusione MK Ultra, DE Feral Flying Pig. All HTF and rare, but are locatable and worth it.

And you need to find a Fuente 8-5-8 sun grown. It ain't rare, but it has a fantastic taste.

Hey Andy,

Pls pm me any leads on kotf or it's brethren. :) hopefully close to msrp. Thank you.

Seems like HTF nowadays == marketing and being in the right place at the right time, instead of "who you know".

Granted I haven't been around that long, though, so one man's opinion...

I can see know that I am going to need some schooling. :) I didn't know AF made a Don Arturo. Didn't know OPUS "Kept a Flame." GoF? Illusione? Pigs? HTF?

I must get out more. I'm an old "newbie." I will take me longer than 4-months to catch on at this rate. Rod! Are you paying attention? It seems we need a rule change. All Newbies can participate after 4-months of good standing here at CP - except Stack!

Thanks for the help and info guys.

I hear La Luna's are pretty tough to find these days.....
