We made it in pretty good shape. First off, the party went well, I cracked open more bottles of scotch than I can remember! Of all of them, the Monkey Shoulder is now new favorite scotch!
The hurricane hit land just a little South of us in Little Egg Harbor and it whacked the hell out of any surface facing the water. It raged against the back of our house all night long to the point you couldn't sleep..and if this was only a Cat 1 storm, I can only imagine what folks go through when these things are stronger. The power went out just as the Emergency Broadcast System blasted that loud announcement (we normally hear only as a test) over the TV that a tornado touched down 15 miles South of us. That sound scared the sh*t outa me as we watched the news reports that followed the storm....then BOOM, off goes everything!
The storm is one thing and we got through it OK...but I have a new respect for the term 'Storm Surge'. After the storm was over and went North, the bay & lagoons started to go over their limits ( high tide + full moon + storm surge) and all the storm drains that normally drain INTO these places started to fill the streets with water! Here it was with the storm having passed...then hours later the road in front of our house was under 2 feet of water as the sun was starting to come out! It was creeping closer by the minute...you could see the water line moving right in front of you. Just as it was headed towards my garage and making life totally miserable, it stopped about 2 feet short....and just as fast as it arrived, the tide turned (no pun intended) and receded. All that water that filled the roads and turned our lawns into swamps was GONE in 2 hours draining back into the lagoons and bay! This has now repeated twice since....creeping closer each time to our garage because of the delay in the real storm surge getting to us.
The cleanup was easy, by the time the hurricane's backside winds hit us...that wind blew everything away...shredded leaves, small tree branches, flowers...all gone!
It's been tough to sleep as you try to keep an eye on the flooding with the tides changing...but things should get back to normal within a few days. All things considered, we really dodged the bullet.
I have a renewed respect for Mother Nature for sure.
