Flashlights don't beat the shit out of people, people beat the shit out of people!

L.A. Police to Get New Flashlights
LOS ANGELES - Police will soon be outfitted with a cutting edge flashlight that is not only brighter than others, but too small to be used as a weapon.

The idea for the 7060 LED flashlight was conceived just days after news cameras broadcast images of LAPD officers beating car-theft suspect Stanley Miller with a two-pound, two-foot long standard issue police flashlight.

Police Chief William Bratton banned the large flashlights after Miller's 2004 beating and called for manufacturers to create a smaller, brighter flashlight.

The new 10-inch, $100 flashlight was developed and manufactured by the Torrance-based company Pelican to meet LAPD specifications. It will feature both a standard "patrol mode" and an ultra-light "tactical mode" that is bright enough to temporarily blind suspects.

Bratton is scheduled to unveil the new flashlights Friday.

Ramona Ripston, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, praised the LAPD for the equipment change.

"It's a really important step in the right direction, and it's going to make a difference in how the police department deals with the community," she said. "We've always felt that a flashlight was not an instrument to beat people with. This new one will serve the purpose it was intended to."

I've never understood the flashlight beating thing. I mean, come on, they have a gun....... shoot the f'in bastards.....

I put way to much thought, energy, and money into my flashlights to get them all messy with scumbag blood. My guns, on the other hand....

That is what I was thinking. The criminals should welcome a flash light beating verus the side effects say of a gun shot wound like death.

I am sure that the ACLU will jump on this with some lawsuits. :sign:

Pretty soon the police will have to use popcicle sticks intead of the baton and a squirt gun so they do ot hurt anyone in the enforcement of the law.

Funny how the videos os police officers giving a well-deserved beating to some scum bag always makes the evening news and front page headlines. While the videos of some F#!%'n dirt bag beating the crap out of or shooting a police officer during a "routine" stop never seem to draw much attention.

Give the police rocket launchers on the patrol cars and that will end all high-speed chases. "Stop or you will be destroyed" will be the new warning given.

You walk down a dangerous path when you take away the weapons of law enforcement and law abiding citizens.

<<RANT OVER>>

Correct me if I am wrong, but the lights are not meant as a weapon. Never were. I know family members in law enforcement were trained to not use a light as an impact weapon except in absolute dire self defense.

What they "officially" tell you in training and what they tell you in private are two different things. My father was in law enforement unitl forced retirement due to injury (hit by a drunk driver). He told me that the standing rule was to go home in one piece. His boss would say that he would much rather hand you your pink slip than go to your wife and tell her the sad news.

If you get in a fight for your life with a criminal EVERYTHING is a weapon. Don't think for one second that the f@!#er would hesitate for a second to beat you to death with that flashlight, handcuffs, rock, stick etc.

Now I am not necessarily defending the police officers in THIS case because I have not seen the video nor do I know all of the facts. However, all things being equal I will trust the police over the perps and ACLU any day!

It sucks in translation...

Unfortunately (and Jason would best understand this) - nothing looks worse to a jury than a cop beating someone with a flashlight - a nightmare for the defense / and a winna for the plaintiff. The ol' "it contains batteries - is made out of aircraft aluminum - is generally very heavy - but was it designed to hit people officer? And did you have other means at your disposal to effect the compliance you desired?"

You can pretty much smack the crap out of someone - as long as it's justified, you don't make it look like it's a sledgehammer beating and it's not "excessive", and you use the proper "utensil".

Unfortunately - you hand a big heavy metal flashlight to an inexperienced, unseasoned rookie and he's going to go to town - guaranteed.

Experienced officers, on the other hand, tend to shoot the ahole...

You ever considered a career change Matt? :whistling:

I thought that was how it was supposed to be in a fight anyway. If I wanted to box I would get in a ring with a ref. :sign:

I have a 6-cell Mag-Lite in one of my vehicles (my truck).

But for practicality purposes (i.e., light), I use only Sure-Fire (M-6).

Now for self-defense....the use of flashlight has never been the first thing to enter my mind...

Maybe I am the only guy on CP to be arrested. Be that as it may, I suppose the fact that he had a gun, the legal right to use it, and I was F*king scared he would, is what kept me safe from HARM.

Ever see the Surefire brands of flashlights? They are unbelievable!! Mil spec (I believe) and built for intended purpose and more. The flashlights are LED and can temporarily blind an attacker, has a hex shaped lens cover made of aircraft aluminum. Prevents it from rolling around, and provides a sharp edge to use for defense.

I always thought that the flashlight was meant to be a back up weapon if needed. Like previously stated, in a fight everything becomes a weapon.

Quade

I have had my own personal run ins with the law and I have witnessed 4 officers shoot and kill 2 young asshats less then 20 feet away from me. In my opinion if an officer is in situation where he/she perceives they are in imminent danger they should be able to use whatever items necessary to remedy the danger, if that is a large flashlight then so be it!

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time, yeah... don't do it...

Time will see that the only weapon permissible against thugs, criminals, and religious zealots will be words! I’m sure a liberal tongue lashing will make him see through the drug induced haze, or lifetime of conditioning, and think twice about what he is about to do!

Oh yeah......and spoons made Oprah fat and pencils made children mis-spell words.

Edited to add more rant...............

Exactly why I got out of law enforcement, stupid BS like this. The crime is so high here in LA because cops can't be cops. Maybe if they beat the shit out of a few gangsters and took a tougher stance, the crime rates would decrease. Pathetic. Oh yeah, and Rodney King and OJ were both totally innocent. Love how the media only shows you the clips they want you to see. LAPD has just become another notch weaker. Maybe they should carry squirt guns. I carry my 4D mag light with me in my car, hope I don't get pulled over, might be charged with possession of a deadly weapon.
