For the record this is AI generated, because I can and it is faster. -
please ask questions, I want to talk about it if you do
@cohibasurfer

I did 20 years in the Army. MP. A couple combat deployments. Long hours. Hard lessons. Real responsibility.
Through all of it, I never stop being a skater.
I have a street setup in Iraq. I have a longboard in Afghanistan to get around base. It isn’t about image. It’s about staying level. Holding onto something normal when nothing else is.

When I come back to Colorado and spend time in the local scene, I see it clearly. Kids out there every day on decks that are razor-tailed and soft. Trucks that have seen three owners. Bearings that barely spin. They aren’t complaining. They aren’t quitting. They’re learning kickflips on warped plywood and pushing through it like it’s normal.

That hits me.

Because I know that kid. I was that kid. Building my first board out of hand-me-downs and whatever parts showed up because that’s what we could afford. No backup setup. No spare anything. If something broke, you figured it out.

That’s where DNTRODDEN comes from for me.
Not from hype. Not from a master plan. From the decision that if I build something, it has to mean something. It has to be responsible.
No debt.
No fake scale.
No pretending.

I am starting lean. Wax first. Small batches. Cash-funded. I make a batch, weigh it, skate it in the cold, leave it in a hot car, drag it across painted curbs and raw concrete. If it fails, I figure out why. If it works, I repeat it to make sure it isn’t luck. I’m not reinventing wax. I’m building consistency.

That same mindset drives the brand.

DNTRODDEN’s graphic philosophy is structure, restraint, enforced hierarchy. Every element is governed by proportion and spacing. Black and white operate as discipline. No texture. No noise. Geometry and negative space carry the weight. Nothing ornamental. The DN monogram functions as structural mass. The wordmark reads as a unified block. Typography leads. Symbols support. The brand is architecture.

Inside that system, DRLCT operates as subordinate. Controlled expression that connects to skate culture without compromising structure. The skull is reduced to essential form. Angular. Stable. Cracks show pressure endured, not collapse. The expression remains neutral. The sideways cap signals cultural grounding without romanticizing it.

Flat icon. Skull. Full character. All of it legible. Scalable. Built for permanence, not trend. Even when reconstruction marks introduce tension, the structure holds.
Reduction creates strength. Discipline builds identity.
I am not trying to be the loudest brand in the room.
I am building one that lasts.

So, those of you that know me; know me. Sorry about the AI gen garbage, while I do use Gen AI a lot to save time, I never put it out as a final product, except my current business plan, and funding forecast, because they are numbers and the numbers are currently correct.

So, Backstory before we get to the why
in the mid 80s all the way to 1997 when I joined the Army, I was a skater, I was around 10 or 11 when I started, it was not until 1990-91 that I started getting free product (called Flow) from local shops. They gave me boards, trucks, wheels, and I wore their shop shirts, I represented the stores, pushed stickers and all sorts of stuff. They paid me in gear to be a marketing asset.

Before that, I rode broke shit, hand-me-down shit, gear that I glued and tapped back together, I Frankenstein’d parts and assemblies to be able to go skate, I didn’t have the money, and my parents didn’t have the money, but I wanted to skate, so I found a way.

Now, fast forward to 2025, I am scrolling Facebook and come across my youngest son, with his son at a skatepark, and that was al it took to relight my flame, at 52 and after not really skating for almost 22 years, I decided I needed it in my life again….my wife is thrilled (insert sarcasm)

The difference is this time I make adult money.
So, I go through, am still going through, all the things to buy and change and tweak skateboard set-ups, don’t like the size of this, buy a new one, don’t like the look or sound of that, buy new ones. No problem, I can afford it. Well, it’s not a problem until I show up at the small local skatepark close to my house, I roll out of my truck with 3 complete skateboards to try out, knowing that I may scrap them all and start over, and that is when I see me, 20+ years ago, couple of young kids ridding broke, passed down skate stuff, and I am sitting on $300-400 worth of kit that I will put in a closet.

Then I did some research, there are a few small local brands in the greater Denver area, to include all the way down south to the Springs. The cost and barrier to entry is not that heavy. $10k and I can run my lean, very lean, start-up for 2 years and not have to make a profit. So that I s what I am trying to do.

I am not looking to get rich; I want to feed the next generation of DNTRODDEN (downtrodden) skater. I want to build a community, use my military discipline and order, to maybe move the scene forward in my town.

Stopping it here

There is a lot that we could talk about if you want, I have nothing to hide at all.
I am sure there are things that I may need called out on, I know this is the family to do that.
There are systems in place for the graphics, the Icons, the visual message, because I am Army, and I need the structure, but also it keeps it unified.

I hope this is better

First: I really don't know anything about skating.

Second: I appreciate that you were upfront about the AI

Third: Not really bagging on you Tim, so please don't take this personally. But, I hate things written by AI. Maybe I'm just old, but it really irritates me when I see things like this written on social media platforms. It just seems so devoid of something. I could tell it's your thoughts, because we all know you here. But yet it's still misses that human element. I often wonder if anyone else feels the same as me?

100% there with you
I use AI as a tool, it lightens the workload

This is the first thing from this project that has not been rewritten by me. In my voice. This family is 100 percent worth the time to rewrite, but also figure if you know me, you know me and my heart

Grew up skating - after 3 L ACL repairs those days are over for me. This is awesome - congrats and good luck.

A little more on the AI

It is why a want you to ask questions if you have them

The art concept was gen by AI, then it goes to an artist and graphic designer for human development
I can’t draw a conclusion and when I do it’s wrong

Outside my house and a few others, this is the largest audience I have shared this with

It is 100% self funded or if I can figure it out it will be funded by non-diluted capital grants.

10k will 100% cover the first 2 years with 0 profit
Looking at a soft launch at 3k as proof of concept

I am working with a chemist to develop a skateboard wax that works across the Colorado climate and has a better glide than most paraffin based wax. Mine is still mostly paraffin but with some additional tweaks

Agree, (about your heart) and that's why I said it wasn't really directed at you. Also, apologies for being off topic

I have captained my own pirate ship a couple times in my life. Every man should experience cashing that first check that came from YOUR work and inspiration and the balls to hoist the Jolly Rodger when you can just say F it.

Your AI lost me about half way through and I got lost in all the lingo.

I think you should consider you will be dealing with two audiences in this venture. Money people (you at this time and place) and the people buying your product. I think that will require two very different communication styles. And Im sure you already know, a solid business plan is a critical thing to have hashed out at the very beginning.

Shark Tank I think is one of the best shows on TV and under represented compared to the stupid American Idol type junk.

Im looking forward to hearing good news in the future on your venture. It boggles my mind to see what Amazon started as and what it is today.

Yeah, the AI Gen was a quick way to get this on the forum, I am about to actually sit down and write it up from my desk.
IT will read better, and make more sense

I will post an edit to the first post in the thread soon-ish

First post updated, please take the time to re-read it, I actually typed this one up!

Please, comment, like, hate, anything you want, if you want

This is really a passion project for me now

One other thing I should mention. Dont be afraid to use a business model that someone else has successfully used for a different product. I knew a gun guy who built quite a gun training business using the Tupperware business model. In that instance his competition was static ranges or locations that people had to travel to. Tupperware was/is sold by agents who would come to your house and you would put on a party and your neighbors would come over and buy product rather than a storefront. In his case he partnered with trainers who would work under his name and train at clubs across the country and they would get a piece of the pie and he would get his as well. There was no central place that people had to travel to. His ship has kinda sailed but it worked for quite a bit.

There used to be a local online retailer that sold disc golf equipment. On the weekends they would head out to the local courses with a van and sell stuff right there. Like a food truck. Maybe something along that line could get you off the ground. I mean when a kid breaks something at the skate park their day is over right? There used to be these service station properties where you rented a lift bay and they would rent you any special tools you needed to work on your own vehicle so you weren't crawling under your vehicle in the apartment parking lot. Think along that line.

My wife worked part time for this mom and daughter who had a boutique women's clothing store. Their day job was running a pretty successful office cleaning service. They siphoned $$$$ off the cleaning service to keep the store afloat, twice. Cray cray money. I never thought that was a smart thing. Dont be them lol.

Just some thoughts. Best of luck.

This, this and again this

DTC at the park, I got all kinds of parts and such, small shit will be give away, I want community and support not just profit.

Not sure either

Some of the graphic are place holders while the design team locks in the final copy

But it just shows the structure of the graphic system

The Main Icon and word mark sort the top tier
That is the down arrow mark with the DNTRODDEN wordmark

Under that are the branding marks is 2 separate systems

One system evolves the main branding
The other develops the DRLCT (derelict) branch which is more the cultural and skateboard graphic style for artwork for clothing and deck graphics

There are rules that the flow chart is trying to express very badly

But the Company logo trumps all and the sub branding must support the main identity and not over shadow it

@insight
Hope that helps
