XM and Sirius merger!

Regular radio is still free, with MP3's and digital cable, I don't see a huge need for satelite radio. How pissed are the guys who paid the $500 lifetime subscription to Sirius going to be when in three years both providers are out of business?

we have XM in the car, now we rarely listen to local radio unless we are in my car, or if we have to borrow the van to haul stuff around in. We love it

I canceled my Sirius before I left for Iraq.....they never turned it off and I've been getting it for free ever since.

I hope this doesn't affect that

XM here, but pissed that they lost the NASCAR contract. So, maybe this will turn out o.k.

I'm a big fan of Sirius. I've had a radio since Christmas and have not been to an AM/FM station since. I'm curious where things will go from here though.

Minor, ever-so-minor digression:

Doing some digging a few minutes ago, I came across a talk program entitled "Smoke This!" hosted by a guy named "Cigar Dave". It airs on Sirius Patriot 144 on Sundays. Has anyone ever listened to this? Thoughts? Sounds interesting.

been a Sirius subscriber for 5 yrs now, FM is dead IMHO. once you go to sat radio, the rest is crap...no commercials on the music stations (on Sirius anyhow), coast to coast coverage, sat radio is tough to beat, Sirius or XM.

I am a huge supporter of satellite radio. I was given a Sirius receiver two years ago as a birthday gift from my girlfriend, at the recommendation of my Dad. Once you make the switch, there is no going back. Anyone who spends any time in their vehicle should really look into this. I think I was also heavily motivated as there were very few "Free FM" stations in Pittsburgh that were tolerable. After making some long trips in rental cars without Sirius, I quickly realize how spoiled I am. Just not having to retune in to new stations during a long trip is worth it.

I think this merger, which I think will eventually be approved, will further redefine how people listen to the radio. Having one unit that allows you access to over a hundred music channels, mostly commercial free, every sports telecast, and original programming, will be amazing.

It's too bad they keep losing money. I would have thought it would have been much more successful by now.

I'm personally not interested in either one. When I listen to the radio, I want to listen to news and traffic reports. If I want to listen to music I like, it won't be on any radio station or any satellite station either so I play CDs.

The commercial free aspect of Sirius for me is really nice, however what I really like is that the stations are much more fine-tuned to specific music type. If I listen to the local "classic rock" station, I can expect to hear anything from the 60's through a year ago! Whereas on Sirius I find the stations stay more true to their identity. And of course where else can you get Jimmy Buffet 24/7?

The Cigar Dave show is broadcast on XM as well. It's on Saturday, and I believe rebroadcast on Sunday.
