What's on your plate today?

Like most North Country women, my wife bakes, and does it well. All you need around here is flour, eggs, sugar and imagination and I can have anything I want. Literally, from eclairs to ricotta pie. I can no longer stand the smell of imitation vanilla baking in boxed cakes. I've gained a lot of weight since I met her.

Man! I'll tell you what gets me, besides artificial flavorings, is the corn syrup in so many products. It's overpowering. I just won't buy them.

Those cakes I posted are 10 bucks a slice, but damned well worth it. Not sickly sweet, well balanced, real whipped cream, etc. A hearty dessert for 2, and lightyears better than the frozen crap at most restaurants.

I learned most things from my Grandmother and loved learning to cook/bake from her. She's still kicking and is the ripe old age of 91. Still makes Thanksgiving dinner, with her incredible cornbread dressing. If she couldn't order it, remove it from a freezer or stick it in a microwave.........my Mom didn't cook it. She did one thing well growing up and that was roast. Hard to mess up a roast, with carrots and potatoes.

As soon as the temps start dropping towards Fall, I get the baking itch, for some reason.

Those Italian bakeries are the best. When I used to live in the Bronx's little Italy, I bought cake every single weekend from a shop called Artuso Pastry Shop, man, those cakes were outstanding and there was always a line.

Edited to add: And the gelato they sold only during the summer.... Wow..

When I used to live in the Bronx's little Italy,

That seems to be the better little Italy left in NYC. A deli there is the only place I can find Ricotta Forte. A Barese Fermented Ricotta. Pungent and delicious. I get it maybe once a year because shipping is very pricey.
My understanding is that Mulberry Street Little Italy is a ghost of its former self. Used to go hang out, have lunch in Chinatown, then have dinner on Mulberry. Loooong time ago. My cuz says they still do the San Gennaro feast, which was great.

Good afternoon CP'ers! Great breakfast this morning. Some charizo y eggs, coffee, and salsa Lizano

Think I've gained a few pounds after indulging in some of this thread;)

Are you referring to Joe's Italian Deli? They make my favorite sandwich, Italian bread, chicken parm, eggplant parm, fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, roasted red peppers and aged balsamic vinegar... I'm drooling just thinking about it  .. Arthur ave is also full of nice little old spots.

Making a Tomato Sauce with meats, sausage, and the rind of the Parmigiano Reggiano.
Coming along nicely. Now just have to decide which pasta I want to use. My selection is limited from about 35 boxes. :D

Just had a delicious prime rib with mashed potatoes and spinach. Nearly died when I ate a bite of potatoes I thought I dropped on my plate and discovered shortly after that it was actually a pile of horseradish (which was identical in color). OMG, I will never make that mistake again!!:confused::oops:
Damn, how much had you been drink'n
;)

It's good for you. It cleans the sinuses. The Abnaki around here eat it regularly in the late summer for their health. I personally prefer it on Corned Beef and Rye.

Enjoyed a nice lunch today with my daughter and her boyfriend at "Loves Sushi" in Newhall, CA...

Some folks have mistaken a small green lump of wasabi for guacamole, wherein sinuses have been instantaneously relieved:eek:;)
