After obtaining my phlebotomy license in April, I have been looking for employment opportunities and applying for all kinds of positions. I didn't realize it at the time, but there is a major catch 22 with the license. Hospitals (and most other employers) won't talk to you about employment if you have less than 6 months experience, they just don't want to deal with "fresh out of school" candidates. You can't volunteer anywhere, since all volunteer opportunities are no patient contact, meaning that I can't come in contact with patients or patient specimens. That makes finding a job that your sole responsibility is patient contact really difficult.
Long story short, I applied for a position inside the California Correction Facilities as as Laboratory Technician, I guess the prison system doesn't care if you don't have years of experience. They just want to make sure you have a license. I applied for a position back in July, and heard nothing until Friday when I received a letter in the mail saying that I was selected to be interviewed for a full time position.
So I have an interview scheduled for December 15th.
