After obtaining my phlebotomy license in April, I have been looking for employment opportunities and applying for all kinds of positions. I didn't realize it at the time, but there is a major catch 22 with the license. Hospitals (and most other employers) won't talk to you about employment if you have less than 6 months experience, they just don't want to deal with "fresh out of school" candidates. You can't volunteer anywhere, since all volunteer opportunities are no patient contact, meaning that I can't come in contact with patients or patient specimens. That makes finding a job that your sole responsibility is patient contact really difficult.

Long story short, I applied for a position inside the California Correction Facilities as as Laboratory Technician, I guess the prison system doesn't care if you don't have years of experience. They just want to make sure you have a license. I applied for a position back in July, and heard nothing until Friday when I received a letter in the mail saying that I was selected to be interviewed for a full time position.

So I have an interview scheduled for December 15th.

Good job 2k, sounds like you've been working your butt off for this. Your determination will pay off.

Best of luck in the interview, but I doubt you'll need luck. Just let them see how determined you are and you'll be on your way!

The best part will be the stories you can tell years from now about your experiences there. I had a friend who was a prison guard before joining the Marine Corps and he would catch people by surprise when he told a story that started with "Back when I was in jail..."

ETA: poor grammar

Hey congrats! Draw a little blood from some inmates for about a year or two, then move up to the big leagues! You'll do just fine my friend, good luck. Mayb you'll have a DE Undercrown to smoke as a victory cigar. ;)

Good luck on the job. Right now it is an employers market, so roll with it, get that experience clause to go away (more tuition, in a sense), and then you will have a lot more options on your plate.
Always a new horizon, brother.

Congratulations on nailing down a good job! Pretty sure you'll always have free parking.
