Smart sensor x2

I discovered my Climate Monitor in my Staebell was about 5 points off by installing a SensorPush and figuring out what was what. And my ClimateMonitor was completely rebuilt, by the factory, a few years back. Looking into a replacement now.

Saying that "...a stable storage system it tends to keep itself, well, stable..." isn't really a true statement. Sure, they don't change fast, but they do change, over time. I checked the SensorPush against a couple different RH Bovidas and it was spot on. When's the last time you salt tested or checked the accuracy of your hygrometer..?? I think it's a great small investment ....

As they say, one man's opinion.....
True, as far as hygrometers are concerned. I recalibrate mine every few years. Also, redundacy doesn't hurt. I have a few hygrometers. But my coolerdor is very stable and with lots of beads and cigar boxes.

But to each his own is the hobbiest's creed, I agree.

You're only as accurate as your hygrometer. A coolerdor is a more or less sealed environment, but a wooden cabinet is not. I agree, the most stable storage I've ever had were coolers with tight fitting lids and bags of beads. But, they'd go a couple months between peeks inside, where my Staebell gets opened several times a day. With an active humidification system, you're betting the farm on the controller running the humidifiers when it needs to. Which is why a double check with a known accurate hygrometer is a very good thing.

My cabinet is tall, like a phone booth. I just ordered a second SensorPush so I can have one in the top and one in the bottom of the cabinet. Problem I'm having is the thing is so full the airflow in the cabinet is really hurting. I've moved some boxes around to try to improve things. I've also discovered my humidification controller hygrometer is about five points off....but I can 'fudge' it and keep an eye on it with the SensorPush monitors. I'll be replacing it too. It's the original one that came in the cabinet ~15 years ago, and it got rebuilt about four or five years ago by the manufacturer. It's inaccuracy is telling me that it's time to get an upgrade.

One thing that very accurate sensors have pointed out to me is....as the temperature of the house goes up and down a few degrees overnight, guess what the humidity does...?? Which is why it's called "relative humidity".....

Edited to add - One thing that needs to be mentioned is that no one should pee their pants over a point or two. Room temperature variation will add that or more to the environment. What you're looking for is long term, steady, accurate RH numbers. Ask a hundred experienced cigar smokers what RH they store at, and you'll get numbers from 58% to 75%. Most of us run ~65% as that seems to be the optimum range for most smokes, but personal preference plays a big factor here. Point being, there's no sense in going crazy if you humidor is 64.97% or 65.81%.....because it just doesn't matter.

I think we basically agree - an accurate hygrometer, regardless of storage type, is critical. My tautology was true, of course, but oversimplified as they tend to be. Blue is blue is always true but there are shades of blue. :p

A coolerdor with a good seal is about as stable as it gets, RH-wise. I limit opening it by using a desktop humidor for what I may want over a short period. It is not nearly as stable and does require a bit more attention. It also serves as a defacto dry box because of this defect. I love turning a fault into an advantage!

Tom has the perfect example of why we need to be diligent... 65 percent could really be 60 percent with an inaccurate reading, which over time will destroy your cigars. I have purchased cigars from Europeans that swear that 60 percent is perfect for cuban cigars storage... well that is true if you are dryboxing for a few days, but the cigars I purchased had been stored for years and were all ruined. Point being, store your cigars between 65 and 70 percent. Check the accuracy of your readings every 2 to 3 months. If you are going to age cigars, do it correctly and have something extremely special in 5 to 10 years or more....

You know, there may be nicer guys to do business with than Bob Staebell, but I sure don't know who they are. Got a new temp / RH controller coming for my cabinet, with a mod that I hope will give me more even RH levels. Reason for the variation is totally my own fault....that sucker is stuffed to the gills...... Fingers crossed, film @ 11....:)

Oh, and two SensorPush units will also be keeping watch....just in case......

SensorPush coming tomorrow do i need to calibrate it or is it good to go?
Never trust, always calibrate... Use the salt test. Fill something like a bottle cap or similar with table salt. Wet with distilled or RO water (you can use tap water, but will be off just a bit) make it slurry, to where you cannot pour any water off... Put into gallon zip bag with sensor, wait 12 hours. Should read 75 percent humidity.

i figured that lol i done it before thanks

Got it today just put it in my cooler till I have time to calibrate. Dam it goes up slow lol

Got mine last week. Finally able to start the calibration yesterday. After 12 hours one is at 63.4 and the other is 66.6. Gonna take them out tonight and put them to work. I think I am going to get one or two more!

All of y'all suck.
I've got two coming in today. Been playing with my Hygroset II Rounds the last few days and just had to have something nerdier to add to the mix.

The great part about these is they make the Boveda sensor feel like such a toy that I put the Boveda in my travel humidor just because I already own it...

I returning my sensorpush do to a issue and decided not to get another because it is a lot more then boveda butler and I can't justifiy the $100 for the gateway. Just ordered the butler from northwoods humidors for $9 plus $3 shipping thanks to there new customer $10 off for joining mailing list.
