What Mixed Drink Are You Enjoying Today!

Followed a recommendation from the young lady at Total Wine and More here in town (they just opened a few weeks ago) and fixed myself an espresso martini. She showed me a recent issue of CA where it was featured and, my-oh-my... that stuff is tasty! Not much of a cocktail drinker, opting rather for bourbon or Single Malt or OVZ, but that was really out of the normal. Consists of 1.5 oz. vodka, 0.5 oz. coffee liqueur and a double shot of espresso, with sweetener being optional -- I didn't need to add any. Shake, strain and enjoy. Too bad it only lasts a few minutes as maybe only a small cigar (thinking LFD Carajos) will suffice.View attachment 66844
I need to try me one of those!! 😍

Donella went to Ocean City Maryland and picked me up a bottle of Old Bay flavored vodka. Haven't tried it straight, but it makes a damn good Bloody Mary. 4 oz Old Bay vodka
1 cup Bloody Mary mixer
Juice from 2 lemon wedges
3/4 teaspoon horseradish
1/4 teaspoon Old Bay
Celery optional

Mix and serve over ice.

I'm going to be fiddling around with this tonight:

Product out of Austin that Total Wine is carrying. Not spendy. I've had vodka & pomegranate juice cocktails in the past, on a whim, and also vodka, pomegranate juice & pomegranate Italian soda cocktails. Both were excellent so I decided to give this a try. I'm going to experiment:

  • 2 oz vodka, big ass ice cube (like I take my bourbon)
  • 2 oz vodka, 1 oz pomegranate juice, big ass ice cube
  • Top that last one up with club soda
We'll see how it goes!

EDIT: I never got past that first bullet point. It's that tasty! 🤣

Knob Creek Old Fashioned with Jack Rudy demerara syrup. 😋

Edited to add: I'm using a classic Old Fashioned recipe: 100 proof bourbon (Maker's Mark 101 and Wild Turkey Rare Breed are also good for this) with a bit less than a tablespoon of demerara syrup, three shakes of Angostura bitters and two of Orange bitters, one Bada Bing bourbon cherry & one orange peel twist, over one big ass ice cube. I muddle the syrup & bitters, add the cherry, ice cube & orange twist & then pour the bourbon over everything. Where I differ from the classic recipe is I don't water things down in a mixing glass with ice first---I like them straight & strong!

In the fall/winter I like to make a maple old fashioned that my late friend Al named “The Fall Guy”. I’ve tinkered around with the recipe over the years because it can get too sweet in a hurry. Here’s where I am now:

The Fall Guy

1.5 oz. Bulleit Rye (most any Rye will work, but the spicier the better)
0.5 oz. Knob Creek Maple
0.25 oz cinnamon syrup
3-4 dashes orange bitters
Garnish with orange twist and a cinnamon stick

Sometimes when I’m in the mood, I’ll add a couple of dashes of Hellfire bitters. This is also good smoked.
