Hi ! I looked at the website of Bob Curtis ( www.cigargroup.com ) for the making of an Igloodor and the use of the Oasis with PG ( Propylene Glycol ). I used the good combination of distilled water + PG ( 50/50 v/v ). After 6 hour i just take a look and i found strange to have this chemical smell in the nose. Is it normal ? Does it can affect the taste of my cigars ?? Any help will be highly appreciated.

Are you thinking the smell is coming from the oasis foam and PG solution, or is it from the plastic itself?

I cleaned the plastic cooler the way it is explain in the topic about the coolidor in this forum ( http://www.cigarpass.com/build_a_coolidor.shtml ) . I put my cigars in the cooler for one night . Just before installing the conditionned sponge with PG/water, i open the cooler and no particular odour was noticeable. So i'm pretty sure this chemical odour don't come fron the plastic. Maybe i put a too large sponge in my coolidor. I have about 200 cigars for a cooler of the size 24 X 12X12 inches high. What do you think about it ??

Oasis floral foam has no smell.

Propylene glycol has no smell.

The HDPE plastic used to make coolers can often have a strong smell that does not subside easily with just a single wash of soap or baking soda. Sometimes you have to leave it to soak overnight. Rarely, a dash of diluted bleach solution for 10-15 minutes may be required.

How do I know? I have 8 coolerdors.

Trash the PPG and buy beads from Viper @ Heartfelt Industries. That is the best advice I can give you....and fill the cooler with the hottest water you can make and let the cooler "gas out". It takes some time to get rid of the smell, so patience will pay off in the long run.
Hope this helps,
Rob

I was told by the people (Mike) at Tampa Humidor not to use PG with the Oasis. It will cause failure of the fan. I was told to only use distilled water.

Which one is the Moontrance cooler? :whistling:

The last cooler I did had a bad plastic odor. Took almost a month to get it out. Had to do the bleach thing, then 4 boxes of baking soda.

Then it went away, chunked some of Vipers beads in, now all is right with the world.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know why this would be?

You can call over there and ask Chris (I believe) and ask her. I can't remember what the reason was. It was well over a year ago that she told me.

Probably builds up in the circuitry or bearing...or acts like WD40 and picks up dust!

Batteries not covered by the warranty. Alterations to the product in any way will void the warranty, such as digging the foam out of the reservoir and replacing with a foreign material or dumping anti-freeze (propylene glycol) into the reservoir. Warranty only available for customers who purchased a Cigar Oasis product directly from us. Purchase from any other entity is not covered under our warranty."

Let's say, hypothetically, that one's unit was going to be unplugged for a while, so they put some PG in there instead of the distilled water, until the extra beads they ordered come in. Hypothetically, once the PG has dried up and the foam is light as a feather, is there any reason they couldn't go back to using distilled water once they have placed said unit within reach of an electrical outlet again? While we're at it, why don't builders put electrical outlets in walk-in closets anyways?

You guys just dont get it.

Bro, you gotta seal up the 'phillys' box down in the bottom.
Seriously, you gotta triple bag your dope, it's stinkin' up your sticks!

Thanks for your help guys . I will not leave my precious sticks in my igloodor. I just start building a small walk-in humidor in my basement. So in no more than a week or two , i will complete the job and my tiny collection will go right in the new humidor. :)
