There has been a lot of concern expressed recently by newer members over how things are done here on CP. There’s nothing wrong with this, IMO. Questions are asked for a reason and usually deserve an answer.

Unfortunately, getting asked the same questions and addressing the same concerns over and over have worn down some of the members who’ve been here awhile, myself included. As a result, we often fail to address concerns/questions in a manner that is completely satisfactory to the member raising the issue. This is certainly evident in some of the threads we’ve had lately.

Which brings me to my point…

If you haven’t read this yet, or if it’s been awhile since you’ve read it, “The Cigar Newbie BB Guide" is a great web site that deserves a visit. It was written by Eric Shaw, a member of CP. It clearly and simply answers many of the questions newer members have about “how and why things are done the way they are” on CP and other cigar bulletin boards. The section on “Protocol” is my personal favorite.

A thread, with a link is pinned to the top of the Lobby forum. Happy reading!

Quoted from The Cigar Newbie BB Guide for handy reference:

Here's some general guidelines that it would be wise to follow as a newbie:

1. Use the Search function on your board before you start a thread that is asking a question. Chances are, your question has been answered many times before.

2. If you don't like the attitude of the board members in general, or you have a problem with the way a board is run, then LEAVE. You're not going to be the "new sherriff in town." A lot of members on certain boards have been there for years. They like the board the way it is, and since they were the ones who founded the boards, they have the right to keep them that way. There's been a recent rash of newbies who take offense to the way people who screw up are getting called out, and get the attitude of "well, you're not gonna pick on ME, what are you gonna do about it?" This is a good way to get yourself shown the door. If you don't like a particular board, shut up and find one you do like.

3. READ the boards for a while before you jump in and start threads. When you do start threads, make sure they are relevent to the forum you post them in.

4. A wise man once said: "Read more, type less"

This was one of the first things I read when I joined here. It is very informative and (IMHO) should be required reading for all new members. There are MANY times I was going to make a new post about a question I had, but then thought "I bet this has been asked before." I did a search and there it was, the answer to my question.

Steve,

Thanks for the post this is a great link, I am off to read, Will it teach me how to affect change and not be a disrespectful martyr? :)

Because he never blows his own horn, I'll do it for him (that's what she said). If you like the site, remember to thank Rod. He's the reason the site isn't covered by annoying Geocites ads.

Nicely done Steve. Its the simple (yet often overlooked) things that make the big difference in keeping this community on the right track.

I think this link is referenced somewhere on CP. It's in a thread from the past!

It may be prudent to have an 'auto' pm or email go to new users....it would inlude links to rules and 'suggestions'!

Then, if the step on themselves...it's really their own doing by not reading the info!

Rod - would that be easy to do?

or

Pin a link to it in the intro forum...or both?

Good point, I'll work on creating a newbie packet, which will include our rules, motto, a link to Eric's site, etc... Every new member will automatically be emailed this packet. This should help quite a bit.
