That amount of money is a mere pittance, compared to what they have, all they'll do is agrivate a group of people that have very few luxuries. A couple of guys going to places like India or China to instuct them on how to live will only bear bad Karma. IMHO!

While I agree the money could be better spent on silly little things like food, clean water, and better health care in developing countries, the simple fact is that smoking deaths are a global health epidemic, especially in developing countries. This includes countries like India and China, not just Africa, as both countries are still considered to be in the "developing" category. Some links from the WHO:

Whether or not you agree with anti-smoking nuts, the truth is pretty obvious. Smoking is a personal choice that comes with significant health risks and we all know that in this country. I for one don't think it is a bad idea to educate people who may have no idea of the possible health risks in developing countries. Give them the facts and let them decide...

Sure, smoking has risks if you over-indulge, but second hand smoke 'facts' are Junk Science, but that point is becoming moot as well. 'Facts' are being fabricated from thin air now, like if you smoke in your car with a child, that child could have a heart attack within thirty seconds of exposure (from Australia, that one... I am ashamed to admit).
When truth becomes dispensable in lieu of monetary and political gains: you know you are in trouble, but when it is sung to the tune of 'helping us live better lives' it is plain scary.

I'm all for giving people the facts if they are indeed actual facts. Call me cynical, but I really don't get the feeling that these foundations will be providing 100% facts.
It's also not just about education. They're focusing efforts on taxation, distribution, cessation, and other control issues. It sounds to me more like a crusade to give people their facts, put them under their control, and then help them to make only one decision.
Modern day "activists" are among the most dangerous people on this planet. They are, by definition, only interested in one side of an issue, theirs.
I totally agree with you that the money should only be spent on education and not trying to influence any government action to control the tobacco industry. If that is the case, then the money truly is a waste. Hopefully the money can be used like it is on AIDS; focusing on preventing the disease through education.
