Beginner questions

do I need to get a hygrometer?
At your beginner's level of expertise, yes. Get a digital hygrometer. I prefer the Western Caliber III Digital. It's gonna set you back a good twenty spot or so.

Not to be rude, but it wouldn't hurt you to hit the search button at the top of this page for a while. You'll find many of your questions covered before.

do I need to get a hygrometer?

thanks for the sugguestion Doc but I'll stick with what it's got for a little while.

Gabe, I'd give you one word of advice. Listen to what is being said to you in this thread.

A larger humidor not necessarily more expensive will give you th ability to sample more cigars, which if you are truly into cigars you will want to do. Most humidors come with a crappy "sponge" type humidification device. Basically wet and what ever happens happens. To fully enjoy your cigars they need to be cared for properly. Humidity is everything. For a few dollars you can buy some Heartfelt beads which are basically set and forget. They are the easiest way to care for a humidor and your cigars.

Again you are being given good advice by a bunch of people that are very knowledgeable on storing, caring for, and smoking cigars.

To put your mind at ease. None of us have any financial interests in any of the companies we are recommending.

so is the black thing on the humidor lid just a case with a some sponge in it? can I take the sponge or whatever is in it out and put in the beads your talking about?

BTW: I do appreciate all the advice, i just don't want to spend much money right now until I am fully certain about cigars.

You can buy a PG solution or for $1.50 buy distilled water. The humidifier that comes with it will be fine for a handful of cigars.
Again don't use tap water. Yes you can take out the foam filler and put beads in, that is your best bet, but more $. Hands down nothing beats the beads.

I have a reverse osmosis system, will the water from that be ok?

I too started too small. Especially after hanging around all these knuckleheads for a while. I now have a vinotemp and I keep my three 20 count humis and several boxes inside with 2 lbs of heartfelt beads. Always buy bigger than you need.
Trust the info you get here for sure. The folks here really know their stuff

I just bought

humidor: http://www.cigarsintl.com/sa8198 (20 capacity, comes with 8 cigars, thanks to Jinxedwarrior earlier in this thread for mentioning it- ($15)

cutter: http://www.cigarsinternational.com/prodDis...DB01&cat=13 ($5)

my adventure begins. I'm not sure if I need digital hygrometer or where i would put it inside.

Congratulations and enjoy! You have taken the first step down a slippery slope. As far as the water go to the drug store or grocery store and buy distilled water. A gallon should cost you around $1 and change. that's the only type of water you should use in a humidor.

Are analog hygrometers not accurate because I could save a bit of money getting analog instead of digital.

So when I buy distilled water, can I store it in the plastic bottle because normally if you keep water in a plastic bottle the water will have a funny taste to it. Thanks for all the help!

Yes sir. The plastic just that it comes in is fine. Good luck Gabe and let the games begin!

I am about the greenest person around here (read as NEWB not environmentally conscious for the purposes of this conversation). I bought a casual 70-90 count Humidor last year to sort of get me started...I bought another Humidor for my own personal stash so friends can have the option to come over and take a cigar as they'd like to from the "Community" one. That lasted about 2 weeks. I just upgraded yet again to another 200-220 count Humidor which is currently seasoning. My next step is to just end this "purchasing" frenzy of Humidors (3 within a year) and go for the Cabinet or Tower.....or just break down and build a Coolidor. I like to put my Cigars on display....

As everyone else has stated....it becomes an addiction, and I can be found at my local tobacconist about 3-4 times a week on a good week.

If this is something you know you're going to want to keep with...You'll be thanking everyone VERY shortly.

x2 on not getting an analog, they may be much cheaper but they are pretty useless. When I get a humidor that comes with one I usually leave in in because it looks good but I never even look to see what it reads.

If your not experienced a hygrometer is really required, later on you will be able to tell by touch if a cigar is to dry or too wet, but even then its best to use a hygrometer. I have multiple in my humidors, two in my 300 count (overkill, but I prefer it) and several in my end table 1500 count.

And keeping the distilled water in the jug it came in will be fine.

Ok, so don't get an analog. Can I find the Western Caliber III Digital at any local places? like walmart, sears, target...?

No, I don't believe so. Keep in mind, I mentioned that particular model because it is one of my personal favorites. You will likely find favorable opinions for many different models if you sought out other opinions. I'd go the internet route for the purchase, and likely from one of the companies I linked to previously.

I looked on amazon and the caliber digital has the best and most ratings. I'd like to find it in a store so I don't have to pay shipping. Or maybe another brand of digital hydrometer I could find locally.

If you hit up your local cigar shop they should carry digital hygrometers.
