SPIVY

THE STIG
My two favorite beers are La Chouffe, Duvel and Chimay White. I would like to try some more. Any recommendations?

Salute,
Ed

Seems like my tastes are a bit different than yours, I typically go for the big, dark ones. Some of my favs are Rochefort 10, Kasteel Bruin, and Pannepot.

  • Rochefort 8
  • Rochefort 10
  • Westmalle Dubbel
  • Gouden Carolus Carolus D'Or - Cuvée Van De Keizer
  • St. Bernardus Abt 12

I enjoyed a big bottle of Gouden Carolus Cuvee van de Keizer Blauw (Blue) last night for the Super Bowl! Big, redfruit bouquet and taste, refreshingly sweet balanced with refreshingly bitter hops.

Sorry, pet peeve...have to interject this:

Belgium is a country; beers from said country are Belgian (like the waffles).

In the summer: Rodenbach, Hoegaarden wit, anny Geuze (propper ones).
Winter: Rochefort 10, Westvleteren Abt, De Koninck.

I love belgian beers. Drinking a bottle of Duvel right now. My favorite would have to be Leffe Triple. I have not found this in the states unfortunately. Brewing triples is fun, but pricey imho.

The Trip is a good beer.
I really like the fruity flavors of the Trappist blonds. To date my favorite is the "Westy" Blond, man it goes down good with cured ham and some salad.

I'm not to familiar with most of these beers but I'm going to go out and try to find a few now....

I have had Hoegaarden and loved it.

I actually just had this new beer I kind of fell in love with. Three Philosophers. It's a blended Belgian style ale with 98% ale and 2% ale with cherries added. It's awesome you should try some.

Is that Ommegang? I've been wanting to try that for a while now. I think it'll be the first one I have after I get over my cold. Is it a Quad?

I also want to try the Obamagang.

Yes it is a Ommegang. Go for it you'll love it. It is a Quad. It picked up the giftset at the store. It had the Three Philosophers, Hennpin, and Chocolate Indulgence with a glass for 20 bucks. Not bad in my book. I can't wait to try the Chocolate Indulgence to compare it to Sam Adams Chocolate Bock.

Unfortunately, at least for me, the Chocolate Indulgence was a disappointment. Mike also gifted me a SA chocolate bock and that was just ok. For the price, nothing beats Young's Double chocolate stout at least of the ones I've tried.

I have an affinity for Vuuve. My local seller of it just stopped carrying...arrgghh. It has a sort of unique lighter flavor than some of the other Belgians. Not at all like an American Light beer...don't even think down that road!

I don't know if you get Flying Dog in your area, but they just released a Tripel that isn't bad, not at all. Otherwise, check your local craft breweries, I bet you'll find something closer to home.
