    Elijah Craig 12 yo Bourbon

I picked up a bottle of this at BevMo this weekend. I'd never tried it before but was intrigued after reading the review since I've always appreciated a good bourbon. When I got home I was getting out of my car and grabbed the paper bag containing the bottle. As I walked away from my car the...

Wine and dine in South Africa

I was lucky enough to travel to Cape Town back in 1999 and take a day trip to nearby wine region. It is indeed a great place and is stunningly beautiful on top of the good wine and friendly people at the wineries. I live just an hour from the Napa/Sonoma wine regions in California so I go...

    Lagavulin 16 Islay Single Malt

I have considered that and am perfectly willing to try the Laphroaig 10yo again to see if my palate is better able to handle it. Still, I don't get any of that salty/seawater/medicinal flavor in the Lagavulin 16 that I remember from the Laphroaig 10yo. The Lagavulin seems fuller, thicker...

    Lagavulin 16 Islay Single Malt

Oh, I've been reading your reviews a lot of late. What a wealth of information! Thank you for making that available to us. And, Mr. Eisler obviously feels the same as you do about the Laphroaig 30yo. :)

    Lagavulin 16 Islay Single Malt

I've owned three bottles of single malt scotch in my life. The first one obtained, about 8 years ago, was a bottle of Laphroaig 10yo that was given to me as a gift, and that I thought was just horrible. I wasn't much of a scotch drinker before that but couldn't believe how wretched that stuff...

    Drew Estate's Kahlua Cigars

I have a buddy who likes the Kahlua smokes. He'll be bummed to hear this.

The Evil Dr. Moki's Group Blind Taste Test #2 (cancelled)

I can't believe I missed this!!! Moki, I definitely want to be in one of your blind tastings. Trouble is I just had gum surgery last Friday so no smokes for 30 days at least for me. Please let me know if you change your mind on this one. I'll keep my eyes open on CF in case you get it going over...

    Staying vigilant

I'm very sorry to hear your cigars got snagged. That really sucks but I do hope you ordered from a vendor that guarantees delivery. The last time I got a letter was way back in 1998 or 1999 but I know it's always a risk. Has anybody actually ever had anything more happen than just getting a...

The Evil Dr. Moki's Group Blind Taste Test #1

A truly fascinating thread. My bosses would surely do harm to Moki if they found out the time I'm spending here at my desk reading through these reviews. :whistling: And, I gotta say, brickhouse is one perceptive taster.

Forgotten Favorites II: La Luna Natural Fuerte Perfecto

I have a 5-pack bundle of La Luna Maduro torpedoes that is from way back when the company started in 1996. At least I think it's a 5-pack but it could be a 4-pack. They sent it to me when I was an editor at SMOKE. The cigars are completely wrapped in heavy yellow and blue paper that sports the...

    Cubans over rated!

Aw, c'mon. You know that's not right.

    Cubans over rated!

To each his own, I guess, but your experiences do not echo my own. Oh, I've had my share of plugged Cubans but that was in the 1999 - 2001 period. The current production has been really good across the board IMO, or maybe I've just been really lucky with my purchases. As for variances on flavor...

    La Gloria Cubana Wavell Maduro

I've always felt that the LGCs lost their magic around 1997-98. I still have cigars from two bundles (corona gordas and churchills) I purchased at the El Credito factory in Little Havana in 1998. They were flat tasting when I bought them and have not improved over the years. A far cry from the...

Another bettle outbreak in an 06 box

I think 72-76F is too warm for cigar storage. You will always run the risk of a beetle outbreak at these temps, unless, of course, you carefully freeze your smokes beforehand. Tell your cigar store they need to turn up the AC a bit and get that constant temp just below 70F.

How Cigar Aficionado does their cigar ratings

Hey, no problem. SMOKE definitely had a very rough road there for awhile. My old bosses there told me some very interesting things back then about what they were up against launching another consumer cigar magazine to go against the powerful and entrenched Cigar Aficionado and Shanken...

How Cigar Aficionado does their cigar ratings

I bought an Oliva V Belicoso when I saw the 94 rating because I had to see for myself what the cigar was all about. It certainly was a beautiful looking cigar, and the construction was top-notch, but I found it lacking in complexity and flavor. Who knows, maybe I was expecting too much, or if I...

How Cigar Aficionado does their cigar ratings

Exactly. As I advised in that thread on the other board, you should really only use magazine ratings as a guide to what's out there, not as the final word on the topic.

How Cigar Aficionado does their cigar ratings

That's me and I wasn't blowing smoke. I worked as Senior Editor at SMOKE from 1997 - 1999. My name is Andy Marinkovich. Find an old issue and check the masthead. I was definitely there. I have since responded to Mr. Mott's posting on the other site a couple of times and he has also responded to...

    Investment cigars

atuck: I totally agree with you. I'm 43 and fully expect to enjoy all the great cigars I've amassed (and will continue to collect) over the next 20-30 years (if I make it that long). If not, at least my heirs will be able to liquidate my cigar "holdings" for some decent coin. My cigar collection...

    Investment cigars

CrazyPoet: Believe it or not, I was going to add La Aurora 100 Anos to the list. I think they're fantastic and a very worthy addition to a fine cigar collection. An excellent choice. Thank you for checking my oversight. I actually prefer the 100 Anos over the Padron Anniversarios.
