Almost lost my eyebrows yesterday !

Almost a year ago I purchased a Colibri Talon lighter at the mall, it was on clearance and it was cheap. After a couple of months it began to give me problems ... flame wouldn't adjust, it wouldn't stay lit longer than five seconds and most of the time it wouldn't light a second time. So yesterday afternoon after a sucessful cigar light, ??? , I attemted to "fix" the flame adjustment knob. Note to self, never ever again do this while the lighter is lit. All of a sudden there was a ball of fire in my hands :0 , apparently the adjustment knob began to leak fuel through the bottom of the lighter and that fuel caught fire. Fortunatly no one, myself, was hurt but there was the faint smell of burnt hair in the air.

I was told your Uni-brow needed to be trimmed anyway.
 
I have never had a butane lighter that worked well after the first fueling. I have tried Colibri as well as others and they all seem to suck. funny, I always thought it was just me :) .. For now I stick to matches, but maybe someday I will find a lighter I like.

same feelings for these lighters, now i just buy gas station lighters 5 for $2.00. works for me! :cool:

Smithers,

The troubles you've had might have something to do with the butane you use for refilling. What have you used? I think for the nicer lighters, people tend to use triple (or more) filtered butane like Lava or Vector (what I use). My Blazer has been going strong for almost 10 years. Well at least 8 I think.

Also, I make sure to wipe the carbon from around the jets periodically.

I must admit that I have used whatever butane they where selling without paying any attention. However, it seems that that should only make a difference over time (multiple fillings). I swear it seems that they work when I buy’em but the First time I fill’em the flame flickers or just won’t work. Maybe I just have bad luck with lighters but it has happened to at least 3 different lighters that I tried in the past 5 years.
 
Yup, this is exactly what happened. It worked great when I first purchased it then I refilled it with the Colibri recommended fuel and "poof". Never worked the same since then.

Maybe this wouldn't happen with a really expensive lighter. So if someone will send me a really really nice lighter , I will fill it with butane and let you know if it still works :D

I think if it was me, there would also be a smell of soiled tighty whities. :sign:

you ever price a colibri? ihmo...a nice paperweight. i have owned 3 of them at various times, and none has lasted over a yr. and yes, i followed the bleeding instructions and all that jazz. norcal, glad to see you are ok, didn't know you liked having curly orange hair.

Did I also mention that I had a lit cigar in my mouth :whistling:

Talk about a duh moment, reminds me of the time I almost arc'd a hole through a pair of pliers while doing some electrical work.
