I have a router that I connect three PC's to at my house. My computer got infected with so many viruses that I had to have the hard drive wiped clean. No, not from porn sites but it all started when I clicked a link here that someone had posted when I was surfing with IE instead of firefox....

So can any of you computer experts help me out here, what should I do, just buy McAfee or is there something better? The guy who fixed my computer told me about grisoft where I see they sell a package that protects up to five computers.

Thanks.

I've had very good luck with a combination of Norton anti-virus and Spy Sweeper. By the way, one of the Ten Commandment of internet use is to never click on a link in a BB.

I use them both and I've only had problems when I have clicked on porn :whistling: ...the moral of the story...get better virus protection!!! :sign:

PS - it doesn't hurt to re-format your hard drive every year.

I dumped Norton's because it slows down the computers. :angry2:

I'll also agree with AVB, I'm using AVG on all the home systems.

AVG - it's free, it works, and it doesn't slow down your system or load it with crap like some other 'biug guys' love to do.

Right up your alley. AGV Free Edition I've been using it for some time now and it works great.

Ditto. A friend of mine who owns his own computer network administration business turned me on to it. I have been very satisfied.

I use McAfee since its maintains itself. However, you got your browser hijacked. To my knowledge, virus packages like McAffe and Norton won't prevent that.

I'm a cheap bastard and don't mind a little manual updating, so I use Spybot Search and Destroy in conjuction with Spyware Blaster. I've been running these for about 18 months - ever since I wiped and reinstalled after failing to remove a hijack. I haven't been compromised since.

All I use is Norton Internet Security suite, (I am trying out M$'s free antispyware proggy tho) and to date I have not had a single virus or spyware program ever install on my system. And yes, I have been known to hit the porn sites once or twice :whistling:

but I also re-format and reload my system every 6 months, as it helps keep the speed up. Everything loads and runs faster, as all the downloads I get and tryout (game demos, programs, etc) slow things down.

Hey Bill sorry to hear about your computer virus troubles. I had the same issues with mine until I recently ran a gamut of anti-virus/spyware software. I had to also do a reg edit of HD and manually remove all suspicious files. Afterwords what really helped was reformatting the computer & upgrading to up to date references.

Now I'm running Norton 2006 (yup I paid $50) plus some Ad-aware6.0 & Ad-watch3.0 in conjunction with MS Anti-Spyware and occasional run of Hijack.

Hope you get it sorted out soon.

AVG FREE

or

AVAST FREE

And the best antispy program out there... spybot search and destroy.

Avoid the new Symantec stuff like the plaque, Nortons stopped making a good antivirus in 2005.

I use:
  • Firefox for a browser
  • Since 2003 I've use a little know product - Panda Titanium 2006 Antivirus and Anti-spyware for all my systems. Full auto daily updates, I've installed it on 15-20 systems for other folks and it has been virtually problem free. I think they still offer a 30 day free trail. I protect all 4 of our networked systems with one license purchase, I suspect you could do the same. From past experience, I do not recommend NORTON products.
  • I also run a freebie, Spyware Blaster, which seems to help.
  • Another freebie - Crap Cleaner is also a handy program to use periodically.
It works well for me.

AVG free edition here and Microsoft Anti-spyware beta as well.Another thing which is probably even more important is to have a firewall installed.Zone Labs has a free firewall that I have been using for a couple of months and it is fantastic. It will defenitely save you a ton of headaches.Always better to stop bugs before they get on your system than to remove them after they are there.IMHO

What Rod said; AVG and Firefox. I also use the free side of Zonealarm. ZA seems to be a decent firewall. The only problem with the free edition is you have no control over it. That doesn't bother me, but some find it annoying. I haven't had any problems so far. From what I understand, if you buy the $20.00 ZA antivirus edition, you have to dump AVG, as they don't play well together.

I dumped Norton some time back. It does slow things down, and several people I know have been having trouble with it. It's not what it used to be, it seems.

CC I would do what most have already stated here... Firefox is a must! Then run AVG Antivirus, AdAware, Microsoft Anti-spyware, spybot search and destroy, Hijack this.

This is what I have and I haven't had a virus/spyware in a very long time. Just be sure to keep them all *UP TO DATE*
