started out below zero, never got warmer than 5, and that's me in the water facing the camera. Plungers got to get into the hot tub seconds after jumping, but I was there for a couple of hours - and it was cold. But, lots of fun, especially when the bikinis needed... ahem... assistance getting up the icy ladder. Raised a ton of $ for Special Olympics, but sadly due to the relationship with the mayor we were not allowed to jump in on duty... can't be seen raising money for charity on duty so we don't show favoritism. Last year a collection was taken up from all the people watching and raised $1200 just to see the safety divers jump in... without the safety diver gear! (We could not even do fill the boot on duty - only off duty personnel allowed)

My brother did his splash on accident during the winter months. He slipped on the side of the canal and went splash. Once the guys at work found out, they got him a jacket with his name and member of the Polar Bear Club on it. I can't remember the exact wordings. I did ask him if he ever wanted to do it again and he said hell no.

I use to do that as a kid, but not sure how the ticker would take it now. Looks like a blast Jim...not sure I would like your job of sitting in there being the safety guy, but hey your a fireman so I have faith you were up for the task.

Coldest water I've ever swam in was in the 40s, though that wasn't too bad. Always wanted to try this out, I'll have to add it to the bucket list I guess .

Looks like fun, but I'm not sure I'd be up for it. I saw too many scary videos at Cold Water Survival Training this summer.

I have seen that before and I think there is one coming up in my area as a fundraiser. I think I will look into it, we only live once, right?

Very cool of you to help out like that Swissy.

Our Polar Bears did their Lake Erie plunge a few weeks ago. It was only in the '20's though. No, I didn't participate.

Visiting family in KC and get to see some of the photos of my step brother participating in the Special Olympics. It's great for the kids but also does wonders for the parents that have so many challenges but events like SO really make them glow.

I understand the neutrality policy. Nice that you were able to raise so much in the past. Maybe we need a Polar Herf. We can extinguish some yardgars in the icy water.

We actually made a special visit to Barrow while on our trip. It was snowing and 36 outside, but I didn't have the b@lls to take the dip. While in the Navy in 1963 we went over the Artic Circle, so I'm a Bluenose, but not a polar bear.

Always wanted to do it but none near us. As a manager of a nonprofit I proposed it as a fundraiser but no one was interested :(

I've done it in 35 degree water but never freezing. If you are ever headed up near WI give me a buzz and we can get a fire and ice herf going.

Great cause to volunteer your time to. I've been to two polar bear events here on the CT shore and was happy to donate $$ both times but no fugging way was I going in the water!

That gave me the chills just looking at it.

Always wanted to do this back home, but NOT in Alaska! Nice chunk of change raised for charity.

That looks crazy. Not sure I would do it, but looks like you guys raised a lot of money...

Funny story! I had a similar experience when fishing on an early April morning. Ended up falling in after falling asleep. Woke up in 38 F[sup]o[/sup] water! Then I dried my clothes by a fire while standing close in my birthday suit. :)

Nice Jimbo! Nice face, I have to wonder what went through your head each time someone jumped, LOL.
