Bird Watchers

A male Hairy Woodpecker showed up at the feeders a short time ago. For a long time I did not know I was looking at a Hairy Woodpecker because they look nearly identical to the Downey Woodpecker. First time I've ever seen this happen - while the Hairy Woodpecker was feeding, a male Downey woodpecker showed up on the opposite side of the feeder. Gave me the opportunity to show the differences between them (namely the Hairy is bigger than the Downey). But - here they are - side by side!

This is a great picture! It is difficult to determine Hairy from Downy when they aren't side by side. Even the size difference is hard to estimate when using binos. The trick I learned is to look at the bill as a ratio of head size. The Downy's bill is only 1/4-1/3 the size of his head, while the Hairy's is almost 1/2 the size of his head.

Just picked up a Nikon Z8 with a Sigma 150-600mm “Contemporary” lens. Had a sweet trade up deal through Nikon on my Z7II (loved the Z7II). Absolutely loving how thez8 and Sigma are working so well together! The autofocus system is like nothing I’ve ever seen - amazing in the speed it locks in and its ability to track in 3D. Enjoy some of my latest photos.

Beautiful! You can tell he descended from dinosaurs.

This Indigo Bunting comes all the time now, and thinks he's 6 foot tall. He's even chased Grackles away from "his" feeder.

I’ve been hoping to see indigo buntings and bluebirds at the dressers, but no such luck! We have a ton of house sparrows, redwing blackbirds, brown headed cowbirds, grackles and European starlings chasing anything away that is remotely interesting! But - I did catch a great shot of a red bellied woodpecker fighting off a starling yesterday. And the woodpecker won!!!_0Z82860.jpeg

Texas traveler and thinde get a bonus point.
Points are redeemable through grateful1.

Doesn't Gary smoke Acid's and Macanoodles? 🤢

I saw it too but I will relinquish my point to split between Thinde and Texas Traveler. Good luck boys! 😁
