Boxes or singles?

So another newbie question. I see lots of people on here buying boxes. Is it better to buy boxes or just several singles? Do box splits help out the people involved in the split?

General rule of thumb: don't buy boxes of sticks you've never tried before. I think most will smoke their way through a fiver sampler and then decide if the cigar is worth getting a box of. The only boxes I currently have are all cigars I've smoked a few times previous to buying boxes. Tends to save a lot of money (and space) that way.

I agree with The Black Cloud on this one. If you have a cigar that you really enjoy then go ahead and buy a box. If you are like me and like trying different things fivers or samplers are your best bet. You don't want to spend a lot of money on a box of cigars smoke 2 or 3 and realize that cigar just isn't for you.

Therefore to answer your question it is all up to you what to buy. Neither is "wrong" its just what one is right for you.

Wrong, boxes are always cheaper from vendors. From members maybe the closer to the same, but in most cases you'll be better off with a box.

Less is not more in this situation.

My box purchases are few and far inbetween for one reason: I don't like to be committed to anything I don't truly LOVE.


I'll buy & smoke a single new cigar for evaluation. If I love it, I'll go back and buy a 3 or 5 pack of a couple vitolas. There are cigars that will change flavor based on the size and I want to make sure I have chosen the right vitola for the flavor and duration of smoke. Those 3-5 cigars will be smoked over a longer period of time. If I still LOVE them and desire to smoke them often I will consider a box purchase of my favorite vitola. If my love subsides or I just like them, I'll continue to buy in 3-5'ers. No sense in buying a whole box of something I don't LOVE.

That being said, those general rules will be bent depending on the price of the cigar and it's rarity. I don't smoke often but when I do, I usually go for an Anjeo or Hemingway Maduro. Both of those are in rare supply so I bought a box of each this week. Now I also truly love Opus X but the prohibitive cost of a full box means I will split with a friend or buy 5ers.

I spent 2-3 years only buying singles and got to a point, where I knew what I really enjoyed and what I didn't. I started buying boxes of things I could see myself enjoying for a prolonged time. Granted, I don't buy as many boxes as I do singles, but I know what I like/don't like at this point.

Also, I've been able to make lots of trades with guys looking for certain cigars, just because I had a box of it. It allowed me to trade for favorites of others, which also let me experience cigars I might not have for myself.

I buy a lot of boxes of LE stuff without trying them. How else are you going to get ahold of some of these limited releases. My reasoning is that i will always be able to find a home for them down the road or use them as trade fodder. Keeping in mind that i dont buy just ANY LE, you need to see a demand for the cigars first.

For regular production, ALWAYS buy a 5 pack first, no need to buy 25 sticks that you end up not liking.

I'm with Brandon on this one. I subscribed to a monthly club with Uptown Cigar for a couple years and got a good idea of what I truly enjoyed smoking. Then, I began buying boxes that fit my taste. The benefit was I had cigars to offer other folks to try since some of the samplers weren't to my liking. This route may not be for everyone, however I made friends I'll have for a lifetime! I started out buying samplers or singles from a shop...found what I liked and then started diving into boxes. I now mostly only buys boxes or samplers from CP. After some time you will be able to know what brand, region, style of smoke you like and then you will not have an issue buying a box of something you may not have smoked yet....example; recently I bought a box of La Casita Criolla with out having one, but I love Pete's smokes and knew it was a hit after reading reviews. In that case it worked, but I would never read a review of the newest hottest LFD and then go buy a box, simply because I do not smoke that brand often enough to know if my pallet will agree with the reviewer.

here is how I started

Find a nice Sampler (CI, Famous) If you like a cigar in the sampler get a fiver smoke them at that point if you like them still buy a box. rp

Box splits are a great way to pick up a fiver, or half box of something without committing to buying an entire box. Whether you don't want to commit to a box of something you're not sure you will like, or if you don't want to spend the money on a whole box then participating in a split is a good way to go. Or especially in the case of super-premium cigars where a box may be absurdly expensive, it's quite common for box splits to happen.

There are 3 box's I regularly buy (cause I like them). The rest I either 5er, box split or buy a few singles. (Oh, and an occasional sampler)
