I don't see anyone posting X Rated material, nor do I see any sigtags or avatars which even boarder on being X Rated. The purpose of CP is to allow everyone to have a good time, and not be so constrained with all of the "PC" BS we have to deal with on the outside.

I am curious as to why a few people on CP find the logo offensive. Is your mind that far in the gutter? ;) Let me explain our logo, as I really don't think everyone quite understands it... This is CigarPass - a community based around trading and passing cigars. Back when I started working on the site (back in 1999), I wanted a logo that would represent who we are and what we're about. The lady sitting on the flying cigar is just that, a lady sitting on a flying cigar. She's not straddling it nor is she doing a "monica" with it. Get it? Cigar Pass = Passing cigars to one another. The cigar is traveling, and the lady is flying on it... Does this make sense now? I have failed to see where people find the logo offensive; all I can say to that is that your mind really has to be in the gutter to find the CP logo offensive. I'm a big fan of WWII/Military nose art, and I wanted CP to have that retro artistic look. In no way did I want anything less than a classy design to CP. Maybe we should ban pictures of witches flying on brooms for Halloween, since after all, that too could be construed as offensive, right?

I believe in letting people express themselves as long as they don't cross the line. Sure, there are a ton of avatars/sig pics with beautiful woman in them. I would school your daughter on exactly what "porn" really is, because CP is not even close to being called a "porn" site.

Two options
- 1.) Turn off sigtags and avatars like others have suggested, or 2.) View CigarPass when you know you're daughter won't be sneaking up on you. CigarPass is not a kid-friendly site, technically speaking you're supposed to be 18+ to participate since we're a tobacco related community.

As far as the poll goes, I voted "NULL".

Hope this clarifies my stance on the issue.

I like the logo, it has class, it has a BWM/Mini Cooper logo look to it as well :D

I also agree with your statement that someone seeing CP as porn needs an explanation of what porn really is.

And I love the fact that CP is PC backwards.......the more we can do to stop the idiotic political correctness in this country the better.....so CP will always be the anti-PC to me ;)

After reading how many of you have sig tags turned off I realized just how many of you have not seen the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th best looking guys at last year's camping HERF :D (no particular order)

Don't you ever get sick of being right all the time.....
Hey Vince,

Not at all. It balances quite nicely my 0 for 12,000 record at home. :sign:

Which of course begs the age old question,

"If a man is home and he is all alone (no wife/GF/kids/significant other) and he says something, is he still wrong?

LOL, he might not be wrong, but I bet he's second guessing himself and automatically thinking he is.

Doh!

Jeff,

I like the way you think, brother. But damn! That's a scary bunch of guys. :0

OK!

Here is the scenerio:

I'm just sitting at the table reading through some posts here at Cigarpass, when my 15 1/2 year old Daughter walks behind me and says "BUSTED"! I turn to look at her and she says " why are you lookin at "PORN", with a disgusted look on her face. I say, I'm not looking at porn! I turn back to the screen and notice the ass on the screen from a profile picture. Now I'm all for a nice butt and perky rack as the next guy, but I have to admit, this was rather embarassing. I mean seriously, it seems that about 50% of CP'ers are using 3/4 naked girls as profile pics or in their signatures. You can't even read a thread about anything here without it being on the screen. I wish there was a rule that this couldn't be used in such an uncontroled manner. It takes away from the integrity of the site. Now I'm wondering how many people at Starbucks have walked past and thought I was on a porn site while I was enjoying my time here at CigarPass.

Anybody else think we should sensor the use of nudity or exposure in profile pics and sigantures?

Rod I think you should seriously look into this. JMHO.

While I agree some of the avatar and signature pictures are probably not the best thing to have scrolling across your screen at work or in public, there is an EASY solution. Turn off Avatar Pics and turn off signatures. Problem solved. I do this at work and leave them on at home - works a treat.

I think the cp logo is sweet. Nothing offensive about it at all.

I'm going to get a hat and wear it around .

Ridiculous.
The "glory days" Michael was talking about were the first couple years here where Michael and others were figuring out how to do things. How passes, trades and sales should be handled, what things should be allowed and what things shouldn't. Everyone who is here now benefit from what Michael and many others contributed to this site. To intimate that his opinion is no more valid than someone who has been here 30 days, or 6 months or a year is not only naive but completely wrong. I don't agree with him on this but to say he should follow a dictum set forth precisely for newbies is the real "hogwash". Let's face it, there are varying degrees of membership here. Longevity while on its face doesn't bestow special privilege it certainly indicates a commitment to this board and should, at the very least, give that member a greater voice.

I did not vote in your poll because, as with many polls, the wording is loaded in the sense of seeking validation for a particular viewpoint. This one particularly so (as MC noted).

If I'm surfing in public, I could not possibly care less what passers by think I'm looking at. Why should I? ??? If I'm surfing where surfing is sort of allowed and passers by are regulars (e.g. work) then I probably will have to explain once and that would cover it forever. When I surf at home in the basement where my office is, sometimes my 5-yo daughter comes down to visit. I've had to explain to her once that "the lady riding the cigar" is the guardian fairy of my cigar website and I've not been questioned since. As I said, sigs are disabled, I don't click "NSFW" threads while she's down here, and avatar pics are small enough (and I'm familiar with who has the racy sigs) that I can breeze right by and avoid drawing her attention. More likely, I minimize the browser and talk with her to find out what's on her mind.

In my opinion, this is not a "G" rated site nor should it be. It's for cigar smokers, most of whom are grown up and almost all of whom are men. It is what it is because it suits the general sensibilities of that demographic. We sometimes cuss, we sometimes like to see images of the female form, and we want a place where we can be comfortable exercising some manliness without necessarily stepping into the crass or obscene.

As MC has pointed out, there are plentiful controls for managing the appearance of this site. Here are my settings from the control panel.

I'm not in favor of global restrictions where personal discretion, judgment, and control would and should do the job.

Well to those of you that say I choose to come to the site, and I should not try to change it. I've been here alot longer than most all of you...I was just remembering the glory days I guess. Keep defending your rights to put what ever you want. That's fine. But don't go saying I should go away because I don't like it. That's just absurd. I'm not asking any of you to stop coming here.
A note to all members, new and old. For change to happen, there need not be a single person agitating for it based on an agenda or intent. I've long held that communities are organic entities unto themselves and will naturally evolve (read "change") in order to stay vibrant and relevant. Anyone who has been here any length of time will be able to recall their own personal glory days and these remembrances involve not just board mechanics but the people that affected us in those formative times. This formation is what imprints the impression of the "good ol' days." There is no such thing as the forum's glory days. Only those of the people who populate the forum.

But I have to say, your last three sentences portray exactly what we tell "newcomers" to do should they strongly disagree with some fundamental aspect of the board. But you say that because you've been here "alot longer than most all of you" means this guidance somehow does not apply to you? Hogwash. Those three sentences are right and just precisely because it does apply to ALL members. It embodies the essence of individual judgment and the choices we all have to make because of that.

Wilkey

ummmmm...........what he said

An "us against them" philosophy is seldom wise.

Neal has a great point.

Longevity does matter. If some guy who has been here for 3 days came in and started posting like Wilkey he'd likely be run out of here pretty quickly as some kind of "know it all" blowhard. If he came in and statred posting like Neal he'd be run out as some kind of "internet tough guy" who is trying to rule the roost without having the juice to do so.

( The following is bolded so everyone can see I"m NOT bashing Wilkey or Neal)
We all respect Wilkey's and Neal's opinions and well thought out posts because they have been here for a length of time and have proven over that time to truly have the best interest of the board in mind when they post. The same can be said of cohibasurfer.

Longevity does matter. Not as much as what one does with that longevity, however, you can't really do anything over time without having the time.

As far as the original post goes, I think some of the avatars and sigs are a little overboard, but I just don't look at them. It's the same kind of thing that I posted the other day about language. I find some of the language used by some here to be rather offensive. They're free to use it as I am free to not read their posts after discovering it. I think self moderation is likely the best option and it's the option I've taken.

Well, I have found a satisfactory solution to turning all avatars and all signatures off. Download Adblock Plus for Firefox and selectively block those that you do not want to see. It will permanently block the URL that the picture comes from.

Alan:

I understand your point here and that you're not picking on Wilkey or Neal but there is a big difference between the two scenarios you presented. Wilkey's posts are "NEVER" anything but helpful and informative and if a newbie emulated that I think people would say to themselves "wow, the guy seems to know a great deal, but alas he is a newb" On the other hand (not singling out Neal or Michael) a newbie coming off as an internet tough guy would get run in a heart beat.

Edited to add:

PS

Rod....the poll should really be removed as there is no public nudity on CP

Yes they are. However, many of them have to do with the way things are done around here. There have been several suggestions made by Wilkey that have become part of how this site works. If a 3 day newb came in and posted the same stuff, he be told to not try to change the way things are done and leave if he doesn't like it (as he should be). We take Wilkey's suggestions to heart because we know by his participation here over time that he truly has the best interests of all of us in mind.

That's all I'm saying.

Opinions vary!

But you're KING! You've slowly been making this clearer and clearer through the years. Your membership is increasing, but the old timers that helped you establish your KINGDOM are slowly disapearing, or have you noticed? I didn't mean to crap in your coenflakes. I just stated my opinion on the logo, no need to get all up and mighty King Rod.This was mearly a topic for discussion, heaven forbid! Lock it then.

My mother used to call this stomping my feet and pouting... :D

This thread begs of moral judgement.

It's not as simple as 'hogwash'.

Look at art work, billboards...listen to some of todays music and what of TV?

Then there's the whole American sex and nakedness issue.

We are one of the 'tighest' countries in the world when it comes to 'clothless' appearance(let alone sex).

Are we going to ban the "Coppertone Girl'?

It may be best to PM those members who have questionable images...then Rod if it's really bothersome.
