I found this empty Grandfather Clock cabinet on FB MP for $50 and thought it might be fun to make it into a humidor. It seems like a pretty straightforward task of just lining it with Spanish Cedar, adding some shelves, and installing some kind of door gasket. My biggest question is if it would be cost effective.

What are your expert opinions and advice?

I believe luan is a close cousin to Spanish cedar but I'm on my phone and could be off. I used it for shelves in my first winedor. Off the shelf item at HD etc.

I do seem to see a theme when reading about people doing stuff like this and they go way in on the cedar and regret the $ spent.

I wonder how the wood its made of will respond to the humidity but you may be gtg down in fla since relative humidity doesn't fall off the table in the winter.

It should be a fun project.

I thought I had a thread detailing my build but can't find it. Basically lined with a plastic drop cloth, covered that with thin luan plywood. Built Spanish cedar shelves and drawers, sealed the doors with weather stripping. I just humidify with beads and it holds RH rock solid.

I have a grandfather clock that looks similar.
It isn't 100% hardwood though. There's some swelling that revealed mdf on the base from some flood damage when my grandparents house flooded back during TS Allison.
Not sure how the cabinet you are looking at is made, but it is something.to consider.

Well, I decided to pass on this project. The dimensions of the cabinet are smaller than I expected, and he wouldn’t send me any additional pics of the base.

Thanks for y’all’s input! It was really good information that kept me from buying something that I ultimately wouldn’t have been happy with.

That just means you haven't found the right one yet. Now that you clicked on that on fb marketplace, it's going to start showing you all sorts of grandfather clocks
