Hey I have a couple of questions about going to a cigar tasting event. What is the etiquette so I don’t do anything stupid, I already have a hard enough time going and getting the dirty looks from the older folks because I don’t look like the cigar aficionado. Lol I just want to go for the good deals, try some new cigars and meet some new people.

Thanks for all the advice!

It's the older folks who should be concerned about keeping their pants up, isn't it? Haven't you ever seen "America's Funniest Home Videos"?

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Do alot of reading here and be familiar with what you are talking about. There is a chance you may know more than them. If you are that worried, bring a good friend and then have a blast together.

For the few I've attended, I usually make at least a token purchase. The last one I attended was put on by Macanudo. I'm not a big fan, but I listened patiently to the schpeel, took the free maduro something or other, went into the walk in, selected and paid for a nice cigar, then smoked it in the lounge. Don't be pressured into buying cigars you don't already know you like.

Edit to add that I'm a regular patron of the B&M that usually hosts these. I almost always bring a 'gratuity' cigar for the guy that serves me. My token buy is usually around $50.

Edit: for a friend

Make sure you are wearing pants!

Screw that shit... don't take any disrespect from the "man."
Fight the power!!.....Wanna borrow my super mega pump lighter?

Steve

Make sure you don't bring Steve...
If you did it would be a major breech of etiquette!

That's cookey talk.... It's always a party when I'm around.
Trust me... the super mega pump would make you the most popular guy there...

Steve

Borrow the super mega pump, get some cut offs and a box of white owls and you will be the fuggin man!

PS: Nothing says classy like black socks with sandals, tivas preferably..

A Cigar Tasting Event IMO is not the same as a B&M event.

At a B&M event, wear what you want and smoke what you want. If its a CAO event and you don't like CAO then buy a Padrón and smoke it. As long as you buy a few cigars to support the shop, it doesn't matter what you buy.

Now a Cigar Tasting Event is normally where you pay money to go sit around and smoke and review the cigars given to you. You are normally required to write down tasting notes and compare your thoughts on the cigars with the other people there. Everyone is smoking the same cigar at the same time, and its more of a Snobbish affair.

If your going to one like I just described and not to a B&M shindig...

Dress nicely, and watch your profanity.

Other than that your good to go. Since your already paying (normally over 100 dollars) to partake in the evening, no token purchases are necessary, but buying a few cigars is usually welcomed by the host.

Sounds like the older folks have the problem, not you.

A cigar tasting event is a great way for a new smoker to learn about a certain brand and talk with a cigar rep. There is no etiquette for a tasting other than to have fun.

Here at our shop in Martinsburg, we have seen an increase over the past year of young people coming into the shop and starting to smoke cigars and pipes. Most of us FOGs here love to see that, you have to start somewhere. The owner and I help them out with selections and recomendations. And we tell them all that no question is too stupid to ask. It's great to see new blood get into this hobby of ours.

Is there Etiquette? The store puts on an about 10 events a year and let me tell you I have seen it all. Some people dress nice, most people don't! I think it's great that people come out just to support the store even if they don't like the cigars. I don't think that a tasting is something that any store should put on unless you are trying to lose money. People that come to those kinds of events don't support the store, all they want is a free cigar! We have events so our customers can meet the great people that make there favorite cigars and get a really good deal on them! We give away tons of prizes. Free food and beverages for anyone who comes! We are trying to create cigar smokers, not just customers! The more people involved(seriously involved) with this culture the better. Back to the point. You are a cigar smoker, don't be anything different that what you are day to day! If the event is hoitiy toitiy and that is not you then don't go! Let me tell you the best free cigar is not worth putting up with bullshit you don't care for to get it! I would rather buy a cigar than to have to sit through a boring sales pitch to get one for free. That's free time I could be smoking!

Try working on your character defects and stop being paranoid.
Go,meet folks who love what you love,enjoy..............its that simple.
If someone is aragant enough to think you aint like them,f**k them, ignore them,be yourself and have fun.
Stop worrying about what people think. If you feel you are getting looks because you arent rich, dressed right,of the same character, class,or town, then thats your own sick shit.Let it go and enjoy.

Be proud of who you are.
Nothing more to be said.
