Ok Guys, you have all provided me with a tremendous amount of help so far. I need to figure out which would be the best for me. I need more storage ASAP and Im not sure which is my best option. I am looking into getting a coolidor, but sourcing the spanish cedar is giving me some trouble. And as far as the Winodor, I am having some trouble understanding the concept of it. What is the temp that the winodor has to be to create 65% RH?

Is the Spanish cedar needed for a coolidor setup? I think all you really need to do is make sure you have some cedar cigar boxes in there to help you out, I am sure you can get those from your B&M. I too have been thinking of going with a coolidor as a means for storage, I am just sure that I have the room for it in my house. I would like to put it out in the garage but I am not sure about temperature swings.

The wine cooler can keep your cigars at a cooler temp if you live in a place that's too hot. That's the only difference, besides looks. I use a winodor and love it. But it would work just as well I assume in a cooler.

Coolidor: cheapest storage by volume, the most sticks/boxes for the least money, no cedar lining needed if you store boxes and/or cedar singles trays, superlow maintenance, but, no temperature control can be a problem for hot regions

Winodor: more expensive by volume, no cedar lining needed if you store boxes and/or cedar singles trays, temperature control means sticks stay cool, but, two types of cooling mean specific approaches to controlling humidity, somewhat higher maintenance

If your temps in the house routinely go above 75F, Winodor may be your safest bet. If you have a cool basement, a coolerdor can't be beat for the bang for the buck.

I have a computer room with a server and 5 workstations in my house and an automatic ac cooling system that kicks in at 81 degrees F. I would love to use the coolidor in there and just lower the threshold of the temp to 79ish.

Ok, my mind is made up. Im going for the coolidor. Any recomendations on brands?

What about methods of seasoning it and keeping RH?

Best bang for your buck, get a coolidor. Just as long as you leave the cigars in it's original box or use any type of wooden box, you should be fine. Not necessary to get spanish cedar. Unless you have individual sticks and do not have the boxes they came in, then yes it would be beneficial to line the cooler with spanish cedar.

Winodor is good to keep the temperature consistent. This is the more expensive route, but the most reliable (unless your power goes out). All you need to do is put some humidity beads to keep humidity up to the % you prefer. Same principal with the spanish cedar. If you have the wooden boxes, you should be fine. If not, you should line it up with cedar.

Hope this helps.

Just do a quick search for coolidor, I'm sure you'll find a ton of info on how people are keeping them humidified. But for the most part I think your best bet is 65% humidity beads from Heartfelt Industries. Depending on how big the cooler is, you'll need about a pound or so, which should be in the neighborhood of $30? Not positive on that.

You can either get the tubes of beads, or buy the beads loose and put them in the bead pouches you can also purchase on the heartfelt site. Also make certain you buy a digital hygrometer with a Boveda calibration kit.

Then be sure to purchase many boxes of cigars, forwarding them to my address for careful inspection. I wouldn't want you to smoke any dog rockets and I'm a great tester.

Good luck!

Seasoning is really only necessary if you're going to have dry wood in there, the plastic doesn't need it. You do, however, want to remove the plastic smell. At the top of the "humidors" section there is a thread about setting up a coolidor with all the info you'll need. For keeping the RH I strongly suggest getting heartfelt beads from www.heartfeltindustries.com.

I would re-emphasize the idea of cleaning it out well. I used DAWN dishshoap (The hard stuff!) then let is set outside (open) in the sun for a day. Don't skimp on the soap and make sure its getting some direct sunlight. Insert beads, cigars and a hygro (I would recommend the adjustable from heartfelt) and start smokin'!

Good luck! Let us know how she turns out.

I've found that Johnson's Baby Shampoo also works and I add several tablespoons of baking soda to the wash liquid and swish it around for extra deodorizing.

This was a test? Right? Did I pass?

Doc.

Ha ha ha, fuggin' Doc. You KILL me sir... How you been these days? Staying cooler, I spose'...

That was my intelligent wordplay for today... And if you didn't get it, obviously I'm too advanced...

Ok, I have my cooler now and I have it sitting outside in the sun light for the rest of the day after cleaning it out. I am getting ready to purchase heartfelt beads and I am wondering how much to get? on top of that I would like to make shelving, but do not have a resource for spanish cedar pieces? Can anyone help a brother out? If you have spare I will trade sticks for them or $$, you tell me.

Thanks.

I went the safe route and ordered 2 lbs. for my 100 qt cooler...

As far as spanish cedar, I got some from a BOTL, who got it at some obscure shop in Los Angeles...sorry mang...

2lbs for 100qts seems like a hell of a lot of beads...

I was going to go for 1/2 lb for 48qts..

Is this too little?

I'm getting ready to go the same route you are. 48qt cooler and I'm ordering 1lb of beads. 1/2 might be plenty, but when it comes to beads I don't mind have to many. Try it with the 1/2 lbs. If it's not enough you can always order more.
