Thanks for sharing...that river looks real muddy. Is it always that way?

Yes... this river is a glacier fed river, and as strong as it is, it is ALWAYS cutting the banks somewhere- so between the glacial silt and the mud it looks like this everyday of the year. At any time, you can look out in the river and probably count 6-8 trees being swept downstream. It's a VERY dangerous river to navigate by boat- very few people dare to do it. It seems someone is killed on this river every year- either in a boat accident or falling in the water from the banks while fishing. I even saved my brothers dog, who walked right up and jumped in! I neted him in my fish net probably 3 seconds before he would have disappeared. This river is so strong and swift that even with a life jacket (which some people wear while fishing) you will get sucked under by the undercurrent. And there is no access to the river after the fishing area for probably 40-60 miles.

Great pictures! What a beautiful area.

I've got to ask.... your method of fishing is to "dip" them out of the water? :0 ......interesting.

:D
This is a 'subsitance' fishery... not sport fishing. That means people that come here are only trying to fill a freezer wit fish meat to live on thru the winter. And, it's only open to Alaska state residents- no tourists allowed (to fish that is...) And don't knock the dipping... it's actually harder than any cast fishing! That damn current will bend my fiberglass pole rather sharply- I've had it at about a 45 degree angle before! After that it's impossible to hang onto.

I have a number of other areas to fish with a rod and reel... fly rod preferred of course! But this area allows me 30 salmon...

and this is one of the most scenic areas I know... I love going over their, even if the fish are not running! The four wheeler ride down the old railroad bed is awesome, although this year one of the tunnels collapsed and is unpassable by 4-wheeler. You can walk past it, and i'm sure it won't be long until some resourceful people open it up again! But the Alaska Dept of Trans does not maintain the trail/road so it's up to us users to keep it up. One of these days I want to get an expedition together to see just how far down the trail we can go- there are some big streams and rivers to get across, but the trail does go all the way to Cordova, on the coast. It follows the old Copper River and Northwestern railroad (CR & NW which was nicknamed Can't Run and Never Will)... if anyone is into history, there is a book called Copper Spike which details the area around the time the railraod was being surveyed and built- the early 1900's.

Hey hey Swissy ..... just about the time I get to wondering where the heck are you. And just about the time I'm getting ready to send out a search party, you surface. The pictures look great! welcome back amigo!

AWESOME PICTURES MAN!!!!! I could post some pictures of my week, but somehow I think that beakers and pipets just wouldn't quite compete with them! I love fishing, but am stuck to the few places I know of around where I live in PA. Some nice scenery, but nothing even close to the environment I saw in those pictures! Count your lucky stars that you live up there where urban sprawl is just a tad slower than it is down here in the lower 48. Thanks for the pics.

Thx... sadly, I'm back. I sure as hell wish I was still gone! I love getting away from everything- people, work, traffic and all the associated city crap. Oh well... gotta pay for them cigars somehow! Thanks for the concern... send the search party anyways- I'll show them the real Alaska!

Fabulous shots. Did you see anyone else fishing? Bears?

There were a few other people there, but not many. A few years ago the side of the mountain came down partially and closed off the road- before then this was actually a pretty popular fishery. You could drive all the way to haley Creek, in the middle of the best fishing area. But since the slide, only a 4 wheeler can get by and not as many people come here... only the die hards like me and my brothers. There is always a danger of more slides- there was a tiny one while I was there! so now just a few people here and there show up- we were there for the week and saw about 3-5 people fishing and about 6-8 4 wheelers parked along the area. Our camp was on the 'main road' and we saw maybe a half dozen or so vehicles coming in- but they are only coming to the 'staging' area where there is a guy that runs a charter boat you can pay to go out on - and he drops you off in the same area we 4 wheel to! On the weekends he's busy, and that's why I go during the week.

As far as bears, we saw none- but LOTS (and I do mean LOTS!) of sign (bear poop that is) We did see a moose, lots of ducks and a loon as well.

Thanks for the vurtual vacation Swissy! It looks like a great place to be, and that line-up of cigars was quite impressive!

Great pictures Swissy. They just encourage me even more to want to take a trip to Alaska, now if I could only convince the wife to spend some of the mini-van fund.

Hey, you got room to bungee cord my big ass to the 4-wheeler ? ?

I think so... if I can haul MY fat ass around, plus tow the trailer with 1000# of moose and more weight in gear, and make it thru the swamps, and up the hills I think it can handle more! (thank God I got the 660!) I had 3 people on it once- me, someone on the rear rack and then someone else on the trailer! I should open a tour company!

c'mon up on and all! (a MINIvan?!?!?!?)
