I know this is a big thing as I have a daughter, but it seems that the intended purpose is taking a back seat to this phenomenon over the last year or two...both in technology and marketing.

I just received another e-mail advertising a new cell phone (Motorola Devour)...or should I say "Social Organizer"....and it got me thinking. Right out of the gate their lead is....

"Whether you use Facebook, MySpace, Twitter or all three, MOTOBLUR syncs all your messages, posts, pics, status updates and feeds directly to DEVOUR. That way, you aren’t wasting time opening multiple apps, you’re saving time better spent on socializing."

"Time better spent on socializing"?....on a cell phone? What's a "status update"? Do I need a mobile "status update"? Do people really want to know my "status" throughout the day? Who reads this sh*t? How the hell can people get anything done and be productive during the day (as in WORK!) when they are posting to all these places during the day? Is this what all these people are doing when I see them typing away on their little keyboards...instead of actually talking to someone. It seems to me a large part of America is looking down instead of looking up.

I do use my business Q Phone for e-mail and voice, but it seems I still do all my "Socializing" in person. I had to get a new personal phone recently and there is hardly any 'regular' mobile phones anymore....they all have keyboards. The people at the AT&T stores looked at me like I was some kind of social misfit...."WHY WOULDN'T YOU WANT A FULL KEYBOARD?" Now I do text now and then, but a standard phone suits my needs for that. WTF...

I guess I'm not the target demographic because I just use the damn thing for calling people.

RANT OFF.

STATUS UPDATE: My second cup of morning coffee is doing it's job....gotta go take a dump...brb

But, you're here on CP, right?

I don't post very regularly to the "social Websites" (Facebook, MySpace...), most of my "social" posting is done via the forums that I am a member of (CP, BMW, TBSS Forums). As most of the friends that I have made there are on line and available via PMs (and I might not have a phone number for them), and I don't have to worry about calling them. They will get the message when they login, and call me back if needed.

I fail to see the difference between the two things you just described. CP is just as much a social website as Facebook. Post about what you're doing today, read about what others are doing today, send messages to people, chat with people realtime, if you want, etc. CP just has more of a cigar focus, but that depends on your friend's profiles for Facebook...

Sure, there are all of the stupid games and groups and crap on Facebook that clutter things up. Making liberal use of the "hide" button gets rid of all the crud, though, and turns it back into what it should be.

Edit to add: So maybe you're post wasn't comparing the two, as I first read. More of a "this is what I do", post. So disregard the first sentence if that is the case! :D

CigarPass is a social network... just fyi. I know it's tough for some "dinosaurs" to understand. But there is more to social media than Facebook and Twitter.

John,
You are correct (with your edit), I wasn't comparing the two, just stating a "this is what I do". After reading my post again, I can see how someone would see it as a comparison of the two. I personally don't really like Facebook and MySpace because of all the "fluff" that comes with them. I am on them, but very rarely go onto them, I like linked-in over the others, as Linedin os more of a professional based network place to connect with people.

Like I said, making liberal use of the "hide" button will get rid of the crap on facebook. Every post has a hide button in the top right, you just have to mouse over it to see it pop up (stupid web 2.0). You can hide applications, like all of the stupid games or hide people, like the stupid people that play stupid games... ;)

Yeah, but then all my friends (including my wife) would be hidden...For some reason they all LOVE those stupid games that are on there, especially the farm one....I guess I need new friends.. :D

You can hide applications or people.

But enough of this crap, I have animals to breed in ZooWorld and cows to milk in FarmVille and have to recruit people for the I BET I CAN FIND 1MILLION IDIOTS group!

John do you want to join my new "Sociopath Wars" guild? We are going around to all the virtual farms and getting busy with the sheep and then going to the virtual zoo to feed some virtual people to the virtual lions for lulz

Even CP is on Facebook.

Very true! And I'm a fan. :p

Honestly if I didn't have FB on my blackberry, I'd rarely if ever update it. I do find it an amusing read when I'm on my lunch break. Most of those sites are blocked from my work network, so I don't bother. That's part of the reason I'm here during my down time at work. ;)
