While I enjoy the Cigar Girl series by AVB myself the fact is there is a large amount of explotation in modelling/pornography field (this is not a comment on any of the specific photos posted by AVB) just as some of the humour in the Walmart Bingo card exploits stereotypes of people to elicit a laugh yet I don't think I've heard any concerns about AVB's posting execpt it's not enough (like that most recent one, I like her).

My take on this is that it is a public forum but I think we lose credibility when we object only to explotative/offensive things we find offensive yet enjoy or at least make no comment on those things that could be equally as offensive or explotive to others but don't impact or offend us personally. I've read the odd comment or post that I've found offensive but as I have enjoyed other things that I know full well could be offensive to others I think it would be hypocritical of me to speak out. My take on the things I find is offensive is to read it, note who made the comment and move on.

Of course, having said all this I think we also need to keep in mind some people may have experienced some very ignorant and rude people in their past and these things may hit a nerve more than some of us think it should.

That is what the card is saying. You can't hide behhind the whole to make the specific acceptable.

And contrary to what was said before, this didn't make fun of "everybody". There are quite a few groups that weren't touched by this card. Maybe we should throw in a few of those groups and see how long it takes before we offend everybody else? I think that could be an interesting exercise, but I'll pass.

There's a reason we don't talk religion or politics here. How is race, nationality, or ethnicity any safer?

Room full of strangers? I call bullshit on that mate. Wow, I've been here a year now, and I just can't remember what anyone's name is. Must be the fact that they are all strangers, that I have sent cigars to, and PMed, and forged friendships with. Weird.

If we are using abstract adjectives, I would name this a community hall, not a room full of strangers. You meet up with your friends and neighbours, share a laugh (and smoke outside because you can't smoke indoors anymore).

Wow people love drama it was a joke card that pokes fun at everyone White, multi racial and all that’s what makes it funny. As for people who are offended I am sorry but there is a lot of stuff posted on here that is just as offensive. I know a few people who will not join cause of the links to NSFW pics. So it is not ok to poke fun at everyone (as the card did it did not pick on one race it made fun of everyone) but it is perfectly ok to exploited young women for our old man enjoyment (not that I care I enjoy them ) but what I am saying is not everyone will think a joke is funny just like not like everyone will think other stuff we post is appropriate. I have removed the walmart card just to stop the drama. And I’m really kind of sad that we have nothing better to do then just let it go. rp

Don't stress too much mate, I know where you were coming from. Good point about the NSFW stuff too. Different strokes for different folks I guess. My biggest beef with this whole discussion is the ambiguity of what is acceptable and what is not. The line here is damn blurry.

There have been many times I wanted to have a bit of a dig at someone, all in fun mind you, and hesitated because I know someone is going to take offence somehow. Different culture maybe? Most Australian humour is dry and self-depreciating as much as it is sarcastic towards others.


But I guess while your post doesn't bother me, it bothered a few people. Shame when you have to hold your tongue when it comes to a bit of a joke. Man, is my tongue going to get dry...

What you're not getting is the subject of venue.

Only a comedienne on stage can successfully walk into a room full of strangers and joke about whatever they feel like. There are aspects of that card that individually, readers of this thread found funny, amusing, ironic, etc. There are aspects of that card that many of us found objectionable, hurtful, personally insulting, etc. This place is essentially a room full of strangers, and should be treated as such when it comes to humor.

The same reasons for not discussing politics and religion apply. Those discussions and humor directed at groups (as opposed to individuals) should be kept for private audiences.

If you just use a small amount of energy you can easily avoid offending an "audience" with a large and varying cultural, national, or racial makeup. It's not difficult to have fun and tell jokes without denigrating other people.

There is a precedent in place at Cigar Pass. A member was banned for making a joke about a lost dog ending up on a Chinese restaurant menu. Some things are verboten here, and it's for good reason.

I doubt an apology is really necessary. Its WAY too late to put the paste back in the tube. This one needs to be chatted out. If you look closely, other than Holmes and me, you won't find any name calling (even though he called me a prick while I just said he behaved like one).

Come on guys, no need to lose respect for one another. I really believe this may be a cultural difference. Every friend or acquaintance from another country I can remember discussing race relations with swears up and down that they don't have the same issues as America does. Whether it's actually true or not I have no idea but, I believe it could be. Because of America's history, and actually it's present for that matter, race is arguably the most divisive issue in this country...... best to just steer clear. You have no idea what life experiences have molded the ideas of what a person deems to be acceptable and unacceptable as far as this issue is concerned.

I must be getting old or something because in the not too distant past a thread of this nature, as harmless as it may have been, would've evoked a much different response from me, that probably would've gotten me suspended.

Religion and politics are already forbidden subjects. I think we've pretty conclusively proven that race is best left alone, regardless of the angle. I will NOT walk egg shells here for fear of offending someone. However, I'm going to carefully consider whether my posts, especially my challenges make me sound like a PRICK.
