This FOG business just cracks me up. Most of you so called Fuggin Old Guys are actually products of the Cigar Boom. Most of you were in diapers or just a gleam in your daddy’s eye when I and a few others here that I’ve noticed started smoking cigars in the early 70’s. Back then it wasn’t cool for a 20 something to be seen in public smoking a stogie. In fact we were probably the object of ridicule amongst our friends.. So if you’re a cigar boom FOG please keep in mind that you just ain’t that flippin’ old and your not exactly a pioneer.

So are you actually insulting and belittling guys because they are not as old as you?

What cracks me up is the guys that are new here but think they should be entitled anyway.

And I thought I was the only one who had this reaction. ???

Last I checked a FOG had a lot to do with time on this board. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!

Nope, that's how it has been explained to me as well. A "FOG" on a cigar BB is a person who has demonstrated that they are a stand-up person, has contributed to the board both knowledge and experience, and has "been around" for awhile.

There are FOGs here that are my age and there are FOGs here that are older than me. I think that is where some of the "issues" arise. IMO, when you have two people about the same age (i.e. peers) who disagree, and one is considered a FOG here and the other a "Newbie", it is often very difficult for the Newbie to relent and admit a mistake to someone who they consider a peer. Even more so if the "FOG" is younger than they are.

In my experience (both here and in "real life"), knowledge and maturity do not always directly correlate with one's age. ;)

Dixie was kind a enough to point me to the "rules of the road".

I still have a post count lower than my member number so I'm still a newbie!

Whatever happened to Dixie?

He's alive and well and burning them in Charlotte, see him often. He's a great friend I never would have met without CP.

He still logs on, but has a lot going on with work and getting his Master's. Look for him in Jan and Feb as he has 8 weeks off of school then.

You won't find a welcome post from me, since the early days of CP were wiped out by an early server change. Ron may have them saved somewhere, but I think I remember they were lost. Like The Master, I started posting to the forums around '97. First did a lot of reading on ASC (maybe even before '97, I had Web TV at the time and you could not post to newsgroups). Then I went over to Bob Curtis' site, ICG and began posting over there. Also did some reading at CF when it was just one board and I don't think a sign up was involved. I didnb't actually sign up there until 2000, I think. Pretty much stayed put at ICG for a couple of years and then the other boards started popping up.

As far as the FOG thing, I don't think it in any way is related to the number of years smoking a cigar. I did begin smoking "seriously" during '96 and the boom. Had cigars at parties with college buddies during the late 80's, but had no idea what they were, nor did I care. The FOG thing is more about an individual boards hierarchy, just like it would be in any "club". You pay your dues toward the membership, in one way or another, and then the "FOG" title kinda fades away. Frat boys should know what I am speaking about. So, just because you have been smoking cigars longer than anyone, doesn't mean you can crash into a club and become the top sh*t. It takes some time and patience.

Very well said. And damn...it brings back some memories too. WebTV...you? Jesus, next you'll be talking about Prodigy "server" and other such BBS sites.

Never used Prodigy. I bought one of the first WebTV units that came to the area. I had been rejecting computers since drafting class in high school. I had always wanted to be an architect until they brought Apple's into drafting class in high school. Decided right then I didn't want anything to do with a computer. I fought my way through college without a single computer class and didn't get a computer of my own until around 1998. LOL! Now I sit at one all day using AutoCAD. I'm pretty happy where I'm at right now, but I think if I stuck with computer aided drafting through high school and college, I'd be a bit happier sometimes. LOL! A degree in the fine arts doesn't pay well until you die and even then it's still a crapshoot. LMAO!

Then there's always the notion of ditching both computers and "fine" arts and just going the porno route. I mean, the real glory days of the late 70's and 80's are over, but, man...nothing like making a million films, living it up, then going out all disease ridden, either dying or doing reality t.v....

For those young FOG's who were insulted by my post... Don't be ridiculous; I'd trade my experiance for your youth in a heart beat. To be attractive to 20 yr. old women again would be worth it.
And to Lee, don't count on out living me. I made a career out of spitting in the Grim Reaper's eye. Just ask the men in 2/5.

LOL

Hope you grow very old, just bustin your balls old man...

Hi Bill,

I'm a "Bill" too and it almost looks like you're almost my twin with respect to cigar preferences. I've been smoking cigars for about 5 to six years, and prefer medium to full Honduran and Nicaraguan maduros. Hoyo's, ERDM, some JR products tend to be my favorites but I'll smoke just about anything!!

See you around the site.

Bill

Okay, I'm new, what's a "host bag"?

I think I can figure it out, these are cigars that each participant adds to the pass that are required to stay in the host bag and are intended for the pass originator and are off limits to the participants, right?

Can someone correct me if I'm wrong?

Tanks
